A Bigger Bang and the Mtherfker Yawned
Yep I dropped five C notes on the Rolling Stones Bigger Bang Show at the MGM Grand in LV. This was the 13th show they did in LV AND Micks Dad died earlier in the day at 93.
This was the second time I have seen the Rolling Stones, the first was back in July of 72 at the LA Forum. It was the Exiles on Main Street Tour with Mick Taylor. Best fkin show ever...when Mick did the Midnight Rambler he took off his belt and on all fours hit the floor with it...this time it was just a bunch of fairy prancing around stage. Instead of Mick Taylor U have Ronnie Knockin on Wood..there is simply no comparison. U might say that the 72 tour was the first of the Show Biz Tours or the last of the Real Bad Ass Tours. However U wana cut it the Stones operate like a well oiled machine that has the numbers timed down to the second. Therein lies the problem the show is just too scripted, they give U your moneys worth, but it is jsut going over the same numbers for the 40th year. In the middle of Jumpin Jack Flash, Mick was on our side of the arena and he YAWNED....thanks, $500 a seat and he yawns...U might as well say the Rolling Stones are the lastest incarnation of the Beach Boyz, who spent years on the circuit playin their moldy oldies..Yep all in all it was worth seein em again, they put on a Great Show, but now that I've seen em, wouldn't do it again. At least this time my ears weren't buzzing for 2 days like the last time...I guess thats a sop for all the well healed old geeezers that show up for their concerts. Now if they were to play a non scripted show where everything hung out...then I'd be the first in line.

Yes - the real Keef, Mick etc died many years ago. The stand ins employed by the stuffed shirts as a means of fleecing the ageing populus of thier hard earned coin started looking worse for wear when I saw them "play" in Munich.
That was 1990 from memory.....

Rock concerts in general suck now. I used to go all the time back in high school and early college - now they're largely just "stadium" shows. Sorry, but I ain't shelling out a hundred bucks (plus parking, plus food & beer, plus merchandise) just to watch a band I like on a friggin' jumbotron from the nosebleed section of MegaConglomaCorpCo Stadium. . .
Video may have killed the radio star, but overproduction killed rock & roll. If I catch a band at all it's always at a small club venue or bar. That rules out most "large" bands, but like I said, it simply ain't worth it anymore. Last one I considered was Dave Matthews Band maybe three years ago. They wanted friggin' $500 for a CHEAP seat (plus parking, plus all the rest). Eff that.

I've often wondered if it would be better to watch a really good"tribute band" to travel back to a bands heyday. I saw one of the early Beatles Tribute bands (Beatlemania) at the Hollywood Bowl years ago, and I loved it.

Did Mick Jagger actually sing, or just yell in to the mic in a monotone voice like he's done for the past 15 years?
One of my friends recently said that Mick can still sing, but I called him a liar. IMO If you want to see a really great show try to see Paul McCartney next time he comes around. I saw him a year ago in Anaheim at the pond. Now that was a once in a lifetime experience. I'd gladly pay a grand a seat to see him again, he was that good. |

I don't understand music. When people wax poetically about music its like their speaking Latin. It just doesn't register with me.
I feel this way about all music. Yes, I have heard songs that I like but I could spend the rest of my life without hearing another song. I know this doesn't add to my life and I am not against music, I just don't "get" it. Other people must have this problem. Last edited by bt1211; 11-12-2006 at 11:13 AM.. |

U have to give it to them they are great showmen, they get the crowd reved up, their material is the Gold Standard. They give a GOOD Show for the $$$, but it seems more like relivin times past. Some of the people around me have seen them 3 or 4 times on this tour alone. One well healed geezer behind me was keepin time, and said they are amazing because they play it practaically down to the second each time..So whats new about that, the only reason I can think of seeing them more than once is to see the different play lists.
Also most of the material has been developed to its maximum potential..how many different ways can Mick do Midnight Rambler, after 37 years ist bin done. BTW.. When I saw the Stones in 72, the ticket cost me $7.13 with tax, and I had a 3 row Loge seat off the left corner of the stage..that was the equivalent of a 3rd row seat. How lucky could I get. This show was 17 rows up on the left side of the stage, high enough where I had a great view, about a 120 feet from center stage. As far as Mick and Keith being dead, I have argued that for years with Curtis AA in paticular. Mick and Keith were beaten to death by the Hells Angels at Altamont. If U want a divide in their music the line runs smack dab through Alatamont...Listen to Get Yer Ya Ya Out, which was recorded one week before AM and everything after...Sticky and Exiles had alot of material that was allready being developed. After that all U got was Dancin with Mr D...on Goat Heads.. I got one thing to say before I close...The juxtapostion of first person and second person narrative in the lyrics is particularily brilliant on Beggars and Let it Bleed, with Sympathy and Midnight being the most clear cut examples. It makes both of those songs totally on the edge of madness.... U might say its the duality of them that I like so much. Only David Bowie in his Ziggy stage was farther out...only he was flown blown. The only song I really like of his is Panic in Detroit or maybe Gene Genie.

Well to Micks defense Mick flew to the UK to see his Dad on Friday and flew back on Saturday to do the show. I'm surprised they didn't cancel. However they recently canceled a show becuse Mick had a sore throat and some woman sued the Stones...because of all the outa pocket money above and beyond the price of the ticket...airfare, lodging etc.
So can U imagine what would happen with the LV show and the majority of ticket holders being outa towners.

Now Tabs, I hardly agree with any of your political posts. But when it comes to music and dogs I'm entirely on your page. Cheers.

I have begun to add DVDs of my favorite bands to my movie collection. I am also upgrading my audio equipment. I too used to go to many concerts when I was young, but I will NEVER pay hundreds of dollars to see a band... And will pay nothing to see one in a stadium. Greed has spoiled the industry...

I just saw a stadium show one week ago for the first time in god knows how long, maybe 17 years? It was my friend's band, RHCP, and it was in Minnesota at the very site of my first show ever, which was Black Sabath/war pigs tour in 1972(?) The sound was surprisingly not too bad, they have completely rebuilt the hockey stadium since the old days when I saw the Stones on every tour, Led Zep 3 different times, The Who, etc., etc.... My last stadium show before last week was The Stones and Guns and Roses at the L.A. Coloseum in '89. That was memorable because of Gn'R, but the RS became a corporation rather than a band a long time ago. By the 1981 "Start Me Up" tour it was all over for them, IMO. God, I've seen that band a lot of times. ![]() Sorry to hear about that experience, Tabs, it sounds like you are a real fan like my brother-in-law. I love them for what they were in one brief, shining moment but that's about it. Don't think I would pay a nickel to see them now, but that's also because I'm cheap. ![]()
