DSL issue- new modem, can't connect

Hoping some of you guys can help me out, here goes.

First a little background, I just moved into this house, my roommate has sbc for dsl service, but it's odd. He has to "dial" in and connect, from what I can find on the internet this seems to be an issue with his dsl modem and the fact that it doesn't support pppoe.

So, I "borrowed" my dad's 2wire modem/router combo to see if it could work, it hooked up fine. The problem with this is that my dads model (1000hg) only has one lan connection. So I pop onn ebay and buy a 2wire 1800hg (4 lan connections) and can't seem to hook it up. It has the sbc logo so i am assuming it is compatible with their service.

FYI on his old modem, the connection light is always green, just cant access the internet without connecting via the dial-up like service. With my dads 1000hg all green lights and can connect wihout "dialing in" and with the 1800hg connection is orange (read: no broadband connection).

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Send the modem back and get a Linksys WRTG54 or (non-wireless model here) - in fact, I have an LinksSys BEFSR41 that I'd let go *real* cheap - it's my old one from before I went wireless.

The DSL modem does have to negotiate a connection, although it's not quite the same as an old-fashioned telephone modem.

As Thom says, with just a DSL modem, it is as you describe - kinda looks like "dial-up" - but it is only good for one connection.

However, you should be able to make the 2Wire 1800hg work. Were you able to configure the 1800 with your roommate's user ID and password for DSL (User ID = email address ie: xyzz@sbcglobal.net)?

Thom - with either of those LinkSys models - don't you still need a DSL modem? The 2Wire box listed above would have all three components built in (modem, router and wireless access point).

I tried the same dial in with un and p as on the original modem, but i want to set it up with out having to do that like i was able to do on the 1000hg.

At my dad's and my girlfirends both of whom have sbc, you don't have to dial in to connect, just turn on the poc and open up internt explorer. That's what I'm shooting for here.

Oops - I'm confusing router and modem! I actually recently bought an all-in-one gizmo (Diamond DSL642WLG) , but haven't hooked it up yet.

van - what you want to do is exactly what the 1800 does. You just need to get it configured correctly. An orange light does not mean that it doesn't see the DSL, it could just mean that it is not configured.

Have you connected a machine to the 1800 and run the setup utilities? Once you get in to setup and get the user ID and PW configured correctly, you will be good to go (green light). You can also then tweak the wireless security settings while you are there.

It's too bad that 2Wire doesn't sell directly to the public, their equipment has been flawless in all my dealings with them.

You typically have to authenticate to establish the DSL connection. This is usually done in one of two ways. Either you have the DSL modem connected to your PC and you have to run a piece of software and 'sign in' each time, or you have a the modem connected to a router and the router stores your username/password and authenticates via the modem and provides the "always connected" setup. If your dad is an SBC customer, that would probably explain why his setup worked and the new one did not. His user/pass was authenticating. You'll need to setup the new router with the correct connection protocol and user/pass info. Unless there is more, this sounds like the issue. Good Luck!
