A friend at work got robbed! New Orleans connection?

A friend at work, who lives pretty close to me, got robbed at gunpoint on Saturday. He said it was 11:00am, he was in his garage with the door open, when he when to get into his car a black guy put his hand over my friend's mouth and a gun to his head. He took my friend into his house where 4 masked guys robbed them. Luckily they didn't hurt him or his wife.

We live in Clear Lake which is a pretty good part of town. Lots of NASA folks, engineers, i.e. not to many poor people, gangster wanabes, etc. I hope I'm not being too racist here, when I wonder if this has something to do with our recent influx of New Orleanians.

This just really pisses me off .

This is pure BS. Anytime it gets to this point in any city then we need more cops patrolling and these boys need their rears put in jail for many, many years.

Hope they find them!

Thankfully, I have faith in our mayor, Bill White, and the Houston Police Department for the most part. I have a feeling these thugs are going to find that Houston doesn't put up with this crap like New Orleans apparently did. It's one thing when they kill each other in their little gang wars, but when they start doing home invasions in otherwise good neighborhoods the citizens will raise a huge stink.

Good thing nobody was hurt and let's hope they are caught very soon. A happy ending would have been your friend blasting all 5 of them back to hell where they came from.

Yep, would be nice to read about these jerks in the NRA "Rifleman" under home defence in a month or three.

Those of you outside of Texas might have missed that our governor signed a law last week that makes it legal to defend yourself with deadly force in your car and at work in addition to your home. Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "Don't Mess With Texas"

Does your state get a sign on every interstate courtesy of the Brady campaign now?

I read that crime in Houston went up a lot after Katrina. We need to bring back public hangings.

Crime is up 25% since Katrina. Murders are up 33%. Fortunately, it's mostly NOLA refugee on refugee. Your friend needs to bone up on the Castle Doctrine.

He's a small old man so there's really nothing he could do. That's probably why they choose him. Either way, if someone comes up behind me and puts a gun to my head with 3 of his buddies, I'm not going to reach for a gun. Hearing him tell the story, they knew what they were doing.

Maybe situational awareness, then.

To be fair, most people aren't on high situational awareness, looking for a possible armed robbery, at 11:00 in the morning on a Saturday in their open garage at home in a nice neighborhood.

I am.
I really don't trust those Range Rover owners across the street.

Glad your friend is okay, and I hope the bandits are caught and made examples of.

Doesn't sound much like a 'gun could have saved the day' scenario. Unless you walk around with it in your hands, loaded with the safety off.

In Arizona you are allowed to keep one on your belt at all times in public. Hope that it never gets to that point but after hearing this sure makes you wonder.

If he is in fact a smaller , older man like me then having a pistol at hand probably would have resulted in the bad guys getting themselves another gun.

Glad they're OK and here's hoping the bad guys go down.

He's Asian and pretty well off, but not rich. It's my understanding the many small business owning immigrants keep larger amounts of cash at home. Maybe they thought he fit this profile as apposed to an engineer with 40 years experience that he is. The neighborhoods around here are predominantly white NASA and industrial engineers and managers. There are a few minorities, but most also fit the engineer and manager profile, i.e. not very many recent immigrants and small business owners.

What really gets me is the broad daylight thing. I'm trying to be politically correct here, but it's getting more difficult. I have nothing against any minority and there are many (just not a lot) hard working and successful minorities in Clear Lake, but there sure seems like there's more and more crimes committed by blacks than there was before Katrina.

What this points out is...there is no such thing as a safe place. There are safer places. I am not suggesting people be paranoid and carry 24x7, in hand, with the safety off.

I mean, several of my pistols have no safeties

But seriously. You don't carry a gun because you THINK you are going to run into trouble.

Gotta agree that it seems to have gotten worse in the last few years. Whether or not there's a Katrina connection hasn't to my knowlege, been established with statistics (I know ...they lie). It would seem that we need more cases like the one on today's news... 77 year old man hears a noise in his house at 3:00AM. It's a 17yr old neighbor breaking in and demanding money. And the "old' man gets his rifle and shoots the punk. As for your Asian friend I'm just glad he's OK. And I hope the bad dudes get caught very soon. Doesn't seem like your friend could have done anything different with his life to avoid this scenario. This whole deal really sucks ... for all of us ...everywhere in America, but especially in Houston. So what's the answer?
