White privilege is real, and it's worldwide. You can go to the blackest country on the blackest continent on earth, and feel the extra consideration you get for being european or white. We are like the Romans of the modern world; a huge minority amongst the peoples of the world and the most privileged by far.
My brother lives in India, before that it was Africa for 15 years. (Angola and then Congo). He travels extensively throughout Asia and Africa including the ME, He told me that whenever he is in a customs line, anywhere in the world, and it is comprised of white europeans he breaths a sigh of relief that he will be through the line in no time. If it is a line filled w/ dark-skinned people from any part of the world, the opposite is true. "It's going to be a while." Does this mean that you are supposed to feel guilty for being white? Hell no! Of course not. But don't be ignorant, either. Live in reality, not some polyanna land where racism doesn't exist and everyone is given the same breaks no matter what their skin looks like. Or where "redneck" holds the same power as the "N" word.
Had an interesting conversation w/ my Dad on my recent visit, he was biatching about hip-hop culture or the loud music that he hears black people playing in their cars, (I don't like to be thumped to death by bass at a traffic light myself, but I digress), I basically got him to admit to some racism in as much as he said that he doesn't like black culture. He doesn't like the clothes, the music, etc., to the point where it bugs him. I'm sure that the same is true of a lot of older white people, and some young ones too. I happen to like black culture for the most part, so I was not with him on this. A lot of racism is really more of a culture clash than actual racial hatred, people despise aspects of another's culture. And every culture has its good and bad, of course.
Anywhoo..., just sort of free-associating at this point,*racial discussion exposition*. I think that most of the people here are really exceptional, it's a great community. Everyone has their role, even if it is just to be an example. :)
