When you invest in OUS mutual funds, not only are you investing in another country's best companies, you are doing it in the local currency. So you are diversifying your currency holdings through an OUS stock fund.

Tabs you can find an analyst who makes a case for any conclusion you want to make. I am not knocking analysts at all I am just saying there are so many opinions out there you can find ones to support any theory on the markets. The key is to focus on those analysts whom you’ve followed for a while and whose track record is reasonable. Also what’s their agenda? Is there research for sale and totally independent or do they work for a firm that’s selling something other than their opinion?

My source was an interview on The Nightly Business Report, Wednesday 11,22,06...Tom Peturno Market columnist for the LA Times.
Stock Market Pundits are like @ssholes, everybodys got one....and an agenda too. Mother down in Tucson watches all Big Block Trades in anything she is interested in. Stealth in Stealth out...

Most Multinationals hedge currencys anyhow, so that they are not caught on the wrongside of the coin...
The Chinese currently hold $1,000,000,000,000.00 of US currency. They use it as a reserve to stabilize their own currency. However on Friday they expressed concern over Asias being over exposed to US currency. This sent the Market down on Friday. TSK TSK TSK...The Foreigners who hold US currency or obligations buy them when a $ = $, however if the value of the currency has declined before they can exchange it, to say $ = $0.50....then they lose 50 cents on the $....and just tell me again who U think is paying for the war in Iraq?

dollar index busting lower each day. At this rate, it may break 04 lows before the end of the year, so that makes me wonder about US corporations with strong overseas presence. If the dollar is falling, it makes US products and services more attractive. As a long-term play, I was thinking about big pharmaceutical companies.
Am I a day late on this? Any other sectors worth considering?

Seems like trying to beat the market is a fools errand. I never attempted to diversify out of the US dollar. I never expected the dollar to be the least weakest currency out there. Since my original post, I sold off a few more rental properties and sunk cash into a foreclosure/fixer-upper. After renovations, I am using it as a primary residence (money invested is about 25% below build cost). If inflation emerges, I should be fine. If deflation emerges, I plan to swim faster than my fellow citizens (ie. virtually zero debt). Gone are my urges to beat the market.

all of you who own mutual funds have some exposure to foreign markets - for example, hp & ibm have substantial operations outside the US.
most MF mgrs. also have some positions in foreign stocks how much should one have? - many say about 20% of a portfolio should be ex-US and BTW, it is quite clear that the action is going to be in Asia for the next several years. |

I continue to not see why hyper- or very high- inflation is likely any time soon.

I can think a few yrs back on a simular discusion, I mentioned to diversify 30-40% of your portfolio into tangable assets like gold and silver. Yuck, that old relic, well since getting into au at 225.00 and ag at 4.00, yes, its a relic, just happens to be appreciating.
Has anyone thought that since most countries are in the ****ter for value maybe going back to the gold standard wouldn't be a bad idea???? First we need to get that gold price to 3-5K per oz. then magically all currencies are solvent,it stops the bleeding and most importantly stops spending by the powers. Things get back to a more normal nature but since random spending is stopped in a few yrs we go back to the non gold standard and the cycle starts all over. Manipulation can be wonderful, a few will love but most will hate it. Heck the current spending spree lasted 36 yrs since tricky Dick did his magic. The Euro, well have you been watching its value lately, the dollar is getting closer to par every day not quite 80 cents today but the good ol canadian 1.05. My 2 cents, this is not advise, your investments are your business. On a happy note, my son will graduate from USNA next week, let the parties begin.
