Election is over....let's watch gas prices.

Looks like they're up 5-10 cents around here already today . Somehow I have a feeling they'll be climbing over the next 60 days. What do you think?

Good call, Bush hates domestic automakers. He will not even meet with them.

Looking at buying some call options on petroleum if it twitches upwards more than about 5%. . .

I'm betting it will. Nope. No conspiracy here. No collusion. Just go on about your business and keep buying them big stupid SUVs. Move along. Nothing to see.

Asshats.
If the prices move, it's because the speculators (like me) are expecting them to move. I'm not a big player but I do move well over six fugures into and out of this sector.
If you really want to invest in oil, watch the DOE inventories and the API reports. it's there.
Spend ther few bucks to get access to the all of the API reports, consider it an investment in your education.
The movement in the price is tied to those two major indicators, with the exception of things like hurricanes and political problems abroad.

I've been investing in oil for many years and have done a great deal more research than most. If I thought there was even a slight chance the prices were being manipulated by the government (or the oil companies) I would be all over it.

And you're implying that the US government has no influence over political problems abroad? Or, the reporting of problems abroad that may or may not be significant for any other purpose than to influence oil prices? Or direct influence on the markets that may not be the subject matter of API reports? And the list goes on...

Asshats indeed!

Well...it's been about a month since the election. Despite some price stability in crude oil (down a bit today), pricing at the pump has steadily climbed over the last month. Although I don't have the time or inclination to graph this stuff, I believe we dipped at or near a three year price-bottom on or very close to election day.

I think it's safe to expect a steady climb going forward unfortunately. Although the price drop didn't save the House and Senate for the Repubs, I'll bet the bloodbath would have been much worse if we had been paying $3+ on Nov 7.

Now, I'm a political conservative and always have been. But, there is clearly some unchecked manipulation going on here.

Sorry, you're a bit premature. The new scapegoats don't take office 'til January.

True, but they are already telling how they plan on hurting business owners and small businesses by seizing the money they earn and forcing them to over pay losers instead of letting them earn what they are worth. Inflation will go up, unemployment will go up and businesses will close or move over seas, just watch!!

According to the DOE, the average retail gasoline price (all grades) went up 3.7 cents over the past 4 weeks. Oh boy, 3.7 cents. That's a 1.6% change.

[SARCASM] Now if that isn't enough to prove a major conspiracy theory I better double up on my tin foil. [/SARCASM]

For what it's worth, regular has gone from 2.03 to 2.29 where I work in PA in the last two weeks. That's 12.8% by my math.

EPA rules, winter formulations, very mild weather in the east through the autumn, Thanksgiving being the most traveled holiday of the year. Lots going on here.

So if you think Big Oil is ripping you off - go buy some stock.

Gas at my local Cheveron was approximately $2.35 for regular and $2.55 for premium on the day of the elections. Today, the price of regular is $2.65 and $2.89 for Premium. That is a $.30+ increase in a month.
