A few decades ago, I found this one in a Glenn Campbell songbook:

"Flushed From The Bathroom Of Your Heart"

I kid you not.

Years ago I got on an airplane that I was going to fly with a new pilot the next week. He had C&W music playing on the onboard system. I asked him if he wanted us to get along all week and he said yes. I then reached up and pulled the circuit breakers on the sound system.

We got along fine the rest of the week... I do not do C&W unless its Shania Twain...

Seriously, who admits to listening to this stuff? I can listen to some of the old country/rock (Lynnard Skynnard, Ry Cooder, ZZ Top, Neil Young, et.al.) but hard-core country really puts me off. I listen to a great variety of music including blues, jazz, folk, rock, but country just doesn't cut it. Maybe some old Johhny Cash on occasion, but that's as far as it goes. "Boy Named Sue", "Dirty Old Egg Sucking Dog", "Folsom Prison Blues", "John Henry", and others are pretty darn good, but Johhny was different.

Don't forget Cash's all time classic: "One piece at a time"...

I'll confess to liking country from time to time...but only in bits and pieces. Most polls cover number of records sold...but here's one for you, most jukebox plays. The single song people put coins in a machine to hear the most? Patsy Cline..."Crazy". Lots of beers sold, lots of tears flowed to that song.

I like the old stuff, Patsy Cline, Johny Cash, etc etc..

Only "newish" country album I've ever bought was the tribute album to Hank Williams; "Timeless". It's fantastic... Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Emylou Harris, Sheryl Crow, Keith Richards, Beck, keb mo

Anyone who's "on the fence" with country would love this album. The Bob Dylan & Tom Petty songs alone make it worth buying.

Cash is, was, and always will be #1 in my book.

Willie Nelson is tolerable on occasion.

All else is, as my Grandmother would say, absolute dreck.

PS: Know what happens when you play a country record backwards?

"I got my dog back, I got my truck back, I got my wife back..."

remember when shania twain did the halftime show at the superbowl a few years ago? (i cannot remember who played). i heard the damn funniest quote ever by a football announcer. shania is hot, but she doesnt dance much, she basically walked around. after her perfomance, someone said,"wow, shania covered more yardage than (insert losing team here)!" i laughed hard.

Or what about Gram Parsons, the original country rocker?

I grew up in a logging town and used to work as a DJ at the radio station. Country music, mostly. Today, as you know, I am a commie pinko liberal. But I still like the very OLD country. It makes me thirsty. Merle Haggard. Charlie Pride. George Jones. Tammy Wynette. Ray Price.

Good stuff.

...."then I sobered up" !

Johnny Cash was a 'punk rocker' before his time. I don't care for country music (with the exception of JC, Waylon, and a few others), but what's passing as 'country' today....ISN'T! And Jeff Higgins....Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, and Neil Young are 'country'? We're gonna have to kick you out of the 'redneck club' for mis-labeling good old southern rock-'n-roll if you keep that up

Buck Owens was a rock'n-roller too....For years, I only knew of him from his "Hee Haw" persona....that man (and band) could rock!

Sorry, I don't know what I was thinking. I'll go home and crank "Everybody Knows This is Nowhwere" until my ears bleed. That should clear the fog...

Anyway, isn't that the basic genre that passes for "young country" (or whatever they call it these days)? I swear I have heard stuff coming from country music stations that sounded a lot like what we used to call "southern rock". I catch glimpses of "country" stars on TV that have all the trappings of rock'n'roll. I don't know; I admittedly know very little about the new country scene. I did used to really like Dolly Parton's tits...
