XM or Sirius?

I'm thinking about getting my dad satellite radio for Christmas. Music is important but college sports (OSU) are the biggest priority.

Does one service have a leg up on the other?

E

Sirius has the contract for NCAA sports, NFL, NHL, and NBA. Nascar is coming to Sirius in 2007.

XM has MLB

I have had Sirius for about 2 years now and love it.

I have Sirius and the wife has XM - she always comments on how much better Sirius is. As stated abouve the sports radio is great and done forget about the king of ALL media - Howard Stern (now that will open up some comments).

Sirius content is great, but for me at least the service is terrible. No matter where I position my 'antenna' I dont get a signal several hours out of the day.

Whenever I have a rental with XM it seems works and the content is good.

I found that XM has smaller and more user friendly units than sirius. Mr_Wizard, you are incorrect; XM has NHL also, along with MLB, PGA & NASCAR. And as for college sports (From their website):

XM user - 3 years running.

The music programming on both systems are basically the same. I am not a big Howard Stern fan, so that's not a big sell for me. Neither am I a NASCAR follower.

The wife and I listen to XM every day - mostly at home. Some of the stations we regularly listen to are:
- Fred - 80's alternative rock
- Audio Visions - New Age
- Chill - Mello techno
- The System - Techno.
- Frank's Place - Jazz

-Z-man.

you have a bad antenna.......this is what happens when the antenna wire is kinked, a kink can damage the tiny center conductor in the anntenna wire......causing intermitant reception.

a new antenna should solve your problem.

i have sirius (and install it proffesionally) for about 3 years, it gets my vote.

I have had both. I dropped XM and kept Sirius. I never listen to anything else in the car. I believe they both give you a 'listen online' feature as well, I know Sirius does. They both are just fine.

No reception problems with Sirius.

I chose Sirius due to Stern's channels and Jam-On Channel 17.

Sirius subscriber for about a year now. I like Howard, raw dog and classic 70's+80's music. The sports channels are good I recommend it highly. No reception problems in Florida and online listening allows me to listen at work.

I've been with XM since Feb 02. (A long time ). It used to have more DJ's on the music station but not so much anymore. I miss that because now it's more like an internet radiostation...sweepers between songs, and no DJs.

If I were to do it again, I would look at them both more objectively. In 02, Sirius was slow getting started and not likely to survive. XM was the front runner. Not so much anymore.

The music stations are probbaly equivalent... don't know if Sirius has DJs, I think they do. it's the additional content/coverage that will tip the scales. XM has repeaters in big cities to compete with the buildings. Don't think Sirius does yet.

BTLS- FTE! Owns O&E and Howard.

I have had rental cars for a week with XM and own Sirius and like the channel selection on Sirius better.

I love Sould Town and Heart and Soul along with 1st Wave and Faction. I also like chan. 53 New country.

I drive back and forth from Florida and North Carolina and this is the only way to go.

Either one will probably be fine with your Dad.

Okay, I'm leaning Sirius. BUT, I don't get it: Sirius has "the" NCAA contract but XM has Pac 10, Big Ten, etc.

???

Good point. I personally wouldn't be caught dead 'listening' to golf or NASCAR. But to each his own.
I will be honest, though. My girlfriend has sirius and I find the music stations to have a slight edge on XM.
