The wrapper that they removed from the roll of duct tape said "10000 uses and counting!"
In Hindu, of course..... |

Which set of these don't you need for take off and landing though? ![]() http://www.centennialofflight.gov/essay/Theories_of_Flight/airplane/TH2G9.htm EDIT: I should metion that I've discovered metal foil tape used in HVAC ductwork and love it. Metal tape which is water and heat resistant, what's not to love?

I saw a couple of guys once cover the edges of a cockpit window with duct tape during a layover at Schipol. Any A&P guys here? This a common fix?

Gon fix it with me hammer
|
i've heard that they do have special high grade ducttape like stuff they use to protect freshly made seals that need to harden a bit... and that they are ok for emergency repairs of non critical things , even on passenger jets... and that they then get fixed properly back at the home plate.

I am an AME...If the window seal is broken or torn on a turn around and depend to the extent...I will let it like that til the next hangar visit....or if bad...create a delay and change\repair the seal...All depend what manual say...you have to stay legal you know....! duct tape...no way for me.

Why not - Duct became popular in WWII and was routinely used on planes (jeeps, guns, ammo boxes etc.........)!!

Now, does that mean that its not used? Hell yes, its used but just not talked about... and usually to get the bird home then repaired correctly. I will not do it as I like having my license but have seen airplanes land with it on... Joe

Several years ago we where delayed in Dallas while waiting for an American Eagle flight to somewhere ... the plane was one of the brand new (then) Embraer turbo-jets replacing the old Fokkers turbo-props... after a 15/30 minutes delay where where 'bused' to the airplane where to much of our surprise we saw a maintenance guy coming out of the plane with a roll of ducktape!!! seems that was used to fix a seat!! or so he told us!!
PS. Flight was un-eventful ... and one seat (with ducktape) was empty

I use black duct tape in the winter on my own Pacer to block off the oil cooler fins. Back when these planes were new in the 50's, they came with a snap on cover for winter ops, but many guys with Pacers and Tri Pacers just use duct tape. I would not do it to a customer's plane, but I would advise them to find a cover (wink wink) to keep the oil temps from being too low during cold weather flight.

That's an A320, you can tell by the winglets, and also by the grunting of the hydraulic pump every second or so.
There is no chafe strip or other element present on the wing at that point. Therefore, whatever they are doing is WAY unauthorized. The A320 has 18 static discharge wicks on the trailing edge to bleed off electricity so it doesn't interfere with the seven flight control computers that make the airplane stay in the air. Do you know how many of the 18 must be present before you can take off? 18. Any kludges on that wing, particularly on what sounds to be a revenue flight, are a very, very bad idea indeed. MFAFF, are you out there? What do you think?

The “Helicopter tape” used to protect the leading edge of composite helicopter rotor blades is the same thing as your “invisible bra” on current 911s.

On my (then usual) run from Dubai to Bangkok, I used to brief that if all engines flamed out over India, I would do my best to glide to the water rather than land safely in India.
After a few seconds, someone would realize what I just said, and start laughing. |

![]() We used to call it "Blade Tape" or "Mach Tape" Aluminum tape often came in handy as a "quick-fix" to get an aircraft back home where the proper maintenance could be performed. Typically on the leading edge of flight control surfaces, whether they be moveable or stationary. Randy

The first comment down quotes some site that indicates it was a prepeg aramid patch, which I guess is feasible.
I have a friend that flew an older Citaition back from Costa Rica with a duct tape repair over the leading edge of a wingtip after the FBO there bumped and damaged it when moving an adjacent aircraft. I thought he was nuts at the time, but it turned out to be effective and harmless.
