A couple of well placed, large armor piercing bombs of about 5-6000 pounds each would blow the bottom out of that ship.

Ever see what the British did with one "Tall Boy" against the Tirpitz. I've seen the film from the Lancaster that dropped the bomb, very impressive.

A backpack of C4 will not penetrate an Iowa's armored hull.

So yes, it is quite useful....just stay in a battleship at all times.

That's like saying "only a few .500 nitro express rounds will take down a charging elephant".

The Battleship Mushashi, sister ship to Yamato and about equivelantly protected to the Iowa class ship pictured above, took 9 armor piercing bombs and seven heavy weight Mk13 torpedos to sink.

The USS Cole- typical of modern warship designs- was almost blown in half with a rubber boat full of C-4.

There is something to be said about 'the way we used to make em'.

My wife used to be in charge of a business that sold products to the US military. She was young and eager and wanted to expand her business so she thought she would try to contact the Canadia Air Force to see if they would buy her product. It was a hit with the US Air Force. We live in Minnesota, so she thought it would be a no brainer.

It took her a week, but she finally located the Canadian Air Force. She finally got a supply guy on the line and gave her pitch. He kindly explained to her the size of the Canadian Air Force and the fact that they really were not a good customer and could get what they needed at Walmart. She asked increduluously who protected Canada? He responded, equally increduluously, "Why the US Air Force, of course".

True story. Maybe she should have tried the Navy and called the guy in the canoe.

If we could use our battleships and military against our enemy in a way that they would not hesitate to use against us, we could do some damage. But we don't because we might offend some Muslims or maybe hurt their feelings. Don't want that now.

Ironically enough Jersey was used in the way you proscribe off the coast of Beirut in 1983.

Calculated speed at impact of the Tall Boy was 2500 miles per hour. It was a great deal more than conventional armor pierching bombs. A Lancaster could only carry one.

Tallboy was the successor to the Grand Slam wasn't it?

I think they used the Grandslams to take out the Sharnhorst IIRC.

BTW, a single salvo from an Iowa throws 24,000+ lbs of iron at the target with an initial muzzle velocity of almost Mach 3.

A Mk8 16" AP projectile weighs more than a lot of porsches do...2700lbs.

On 11 Apr 1945, USS Missouri was struck dead on the superstructure by a Kamikaze attack. Not a single US crewman was killed. The armor on an Iowa class battleship's armored superstructure is as much as 19" thick. If you're ever at Pearl you can still see the scars where the plane hit.

One 15in shell from Bismarck disintegrated the battlecruiser HMS Hood. 3 men were recovered from a complement of 1500.

Technology from bygone time when you could fight wars with overwhelming firepower. Now it just takes great photos and makes folks feel good about overwheming firepower.

The opposite. The Tall Boy was a small, 10,000 pound version of Barnes Wallis "earthquake" bomb technology. Wallis was an aeronautical engineer who came up with the bouncing bombs used by the famous "Dambusters" successfully. The Grand Slam was a 22,000 pound bomb that was built as a result of the successes of the Tall Boy. You should click on my link above, the story is interesting, there's a list of the targets hit by both types of bombs.
