2007 Vw Gti

I just picked up a 07' GTI and I cant say enough about the quality and drivibility of that thing. I traded in my 84 Carrera Targa and still have a 97C2S that I am keeping, but I must say the GTI is one heck of a car. It doesnt have any of that tourque steering that you feel with lots of front wheel drive cars. I makes 207 lbs of tourque at 1800 rpms.

Yep! They're really very nice cars. Head turners, especially with the big chrome wheels.

Did you get it for close to list price? Do you have any modifications planned?

Board member Todd/nostatic has one of those, at least I think it's an '07. Nice car.

yeah, I've got an '07 with DSG. I wish I had a stick now that my leg is better, but it's ok. In auto/sport mode the car is wicked fast. And the paddle shifters work like butter...I still like a clutch though.

Have you gotten the "no sat radio" issue yet?

Neat car, but I think the Mazdaspeed 3 would be just as fun and a lot more reliable than the VW. VW has had a lot of reliability problems in the past few years. I gather this not only from the JD power stats, but also from some friends and co-workers who have owned them.

MS3 has a pretty crappy interior compared to the VW. Reliability of the mk 5 platform has been good so far, but we'll see.

I have the same engine in my A3 2.0 TFSI quattro - 18,000 miles with no problems and getting more miles to the gallon as it gets run-in. Great engine.

I wish VW would introduce a small, sporty "hot hatch" now that the GTI has moved so far in the big luxo direction. A sports-focused hatchback would fit in nicely under the GTI and not compete at all.

I got a little off the car. I know the salelsman. Its kind of funny, asked if I have any plans for mods. I can only think of Porsches when it comes to mods. I think I like it just the way it is. The 993, however really could use a 9 thousand dollar mod to the perfectly good gearbox shortning the gear ratio and a limited slip.
Oh what else? 3.8 etc.

you mean , like a VW Polo?

i suppose you guys don't get that model in the US?
it was always the smaller model below the Golf
but in recent years, the Golf got bloated
and the Polo is now about the same size as a mk1 golf used to be

and in turn VW has now smaller models below the Polo , like the Lupo(discontinued) and the Brazillian built Fox...

No, we don't get the Polo, but now is the perfect time for VW to import it! Nissan, Toyota, and Honda have brough in their sub-compacts (Versa, Yaris, and Fit), so the market must be there. I think the problem is that the Polo is built in Europe and because of the exchange rate would be priced the same as the Rabbit here, which is built in Mexico.

Most new VWs hold up fine until the warranty runs out, but three people I know with 3-5 year old ones are having a lot of issues. If you don't keep your cars that long then it doesn't matter.

I understand there is a company in the UK buying old Peugeot 205 GTIs (the best GTI ever, some would say), completely overhauling them with a few fixes and mild performance upgrades and selling them for the equivalent of ~$10k.

Sometimes the best version of a car has already been built.

205 gti's, as far as i'm concerned don't beat a VW mk1 gti
the 205's handling is downright nasty at speed, at least in stock form...

i'de rather beef up a Golf's powerplant a bit,
then tackle the suspension of a very old chassis...that wasn't to stable to begin with...

german steel over french rust any day of the week

I saw a Lupo on the road here recently. I'm guessing it was a test car for one of the local proving grounds (AFAIK Toyota, GM, and Nissan are all in the area...VW too, I think).

Yep, it said "LUPO" on the back and I said to my wife "What the hell is that???" Her reply was that it might be an escaped prop from a live-action Miyazaki film:

Volkswagen Lupo
Manufacturer: Volkswagen
Production: 1998-2005
Successor: Volkswagen Fox
Class: City car
Engine: 1.0 L I3 (Diesel)
1.0 L I4 (Petrol)
Related: SEAT Arosa

The Volkswagen Lupo was a city car manufactured by German automaker Volkswagen from 1998 to 2005.

It was introduced in 1998 to fill a gap at the bottom of the VW model range caused by the increasing size and weight of the VW Polo. Rivals included the Ford Ka, the Opel Agila and the Fiat Panda. The SEAT Arosa was a badge-engineered version of the Lupo.

The car was available with a variety of engine sizes and trim levels, from budget models through to the GTI variant. The 6-speed Lupo GTI has been labelled a true successor to the VW Golf Mk.1, the first true hot hatch.

Various special-edition and test models have set records in fuel economy. The lightweight nature of the car and advanced 3-cylinder diesel engine have resulted in a production model (the Lupo 3L) that can consume as little as 3 litres per 100 kilometres (78 miles per US gallon or 94 miles per Imperial gallon). It was rumoured that it was this model that encouraged Renault to produced the Clio V6, since they assumed 3L stood for a 3-litre engine.

Production of the Lupo ceased in 2005. It has been replaced by the VW Fox.

Wow, a 1L engine??! Considering I saw this thing on I10 at 80+ mph, I imagine the driver was pedaling pretty hard.
