Help! My Volvo Won't Start

My 1996 Volvo 850 would not start this AM. The IP, radio and lights worked fine but the car would not even turn. It didn't behave like a dead battery. No click, not even a sputter. I did notice that over the past week or so there has been about a second delay from the time I turn the key to when it actually ignites. So here is what I'm thinking it could be:

1) the battery connection could be slightly corroded (maybe another terminal) - enough to power the small stuff but the starter (requiring big amps) ain't git'n da juice.
2) the starter is done. I would think that it would have gone over the hot months.
3) ignition switch.

What do yo'all think?

hmm, I have a 95 850. it seems like I remember seeing on one of the volvo boards something about the switches going out. I'd check for good connections on the battery first and go from there.

You might check these boards also www.volvospeed.com or www.swedespeed.com good luck.

Probably a failing ground or failing starter.

Have you tried the 'ol bang on the starter trick and see if it responds?

I would first check my grounds, make sure the negative on the battery is clean and is contacting the frame well.

Jim - simplest explanation and you were correct. I was thinking that a new starter was gonna cost $$$, turned out to be a lose ground. Tighen'd and running fine. Still can't figuer a good enough resaon to get rid of her but I'll keep looking! Thanks.
