Harley Forum OT
I just bought a 2000 Road King. Can anyone here recommend a decent Harley Forum? Sorry about the OT but thought there might be help here. TIA

I'm about to pull the trigger on a VRSCR, so I searched out forums myself, most of what I found were low-traffic clunky BBS's; there have to be better ones out there.
hdforums.com was merely OK, but I found a link there to a V-Rod specific forum thats excellent. You might try there and hunt for mentions of other, better forums. (by better I mean function, not participants) Not much help..I know there are several other owners here that'll chime in . |

If you can find a decent H-D tech forum let me know. I've been on H-D's since long before Al invented the Internet, and looking for a decent forum ever since he did. I just can't find one that has the technical content of this one. Most of their forums are pretty much like this off-topic, but with more attitude (if that's possible).
I'm convinced that anyone that actually works on their own H-D is too "old school" to even figure out the Internet (except for me, that is...). The newer riders don't wrench and are attracted to newer H-D's because they don't have to. So, all they talk about is how helmet laws suck, how many tits they saw at which rally, that helmet laws suck, or who makes the best chrome, or helmet laws suck... you get the idea. By the way, great bike. I've got a 2000 Road King myself; mostly stock, with some comfort upgrades for touring. Almost 75,000 miles already, with virtually no trouble whatsoever. Probably the most important thing to determine on your bike for now is the date of manufacture. The 2000 model year bikes made in or before October 1999 are all suspect with regards to the infamous rear cam bearings. H-D sent out a service bulletin to dealers, and extended the engine warrenty to 50,000 miles with no time limit to owners of these bikes. If yours is an early 2000, and has not had the upgrade installed, do it soon. Other than that, there should be nothing at all that needs attention other than normal maintanence items. Have fun with that thing!

Thanks for the reply guys, I guess we are pretty spoiled here. The courtesy and level of people's commitment on this site is great. Jeff, I too wrench almost everything I own. Of course I don't do it for fun like I used to. Thanks for the tip on the cam bearings. I had not heard of that one. Sounds like HD is stepping up though. How do I find the build date? I guess every vehicle has it's Achilles heel. P.S. I'm 59 and got my first bike at 14. A 500 Norton single w/hardtail frame. In that day if you didn't wrench it you didn't ride it. The good ole days!

Jeff - interestingly your '76 Harley has more miles on it than my '76 911 and your 2000 Harley has more miles on it than my 2000 Toyota pickup. You must ride *alot*. :>)

I can't remember now how I figured out my build date. It's related to the VIN, obviously, but I can't remember how to decipher the code. It seems to me that you used to be able to inquire of H-D customer service to get the build date. I would try a call to their 800 number, or an e-mail. For me, it was very obvious mine was affected when I got the letter from H-D extending the engine warrenty.
Yeah Mike, I ride a lot. Almost every day that it is not raining too hard. I put many more miles on my bikes in any given year than my cars, even my daily driver. I ride to relax and unwind after work. It's tough up here this time of year with the short days and nasty weather, but I try. An after work jaunt for me typically runs through at least a tank of gas on the big bagger, which is 160 miles or so. I've done it so long it's just a part of my day now; I get pretty edgy when I miss my rides for too long. Like right now. Damn snow...

Tell me about the weather. On Wed. it was 72 deg. here. I went out and rode about 75 mi. Thurs. it was 28 and we had a huge ice storm. I still have power but there are close to 500,000 without in the St. Louis area. Tree limbs down everywhere, airport down, just crappy. It's going to be a long night for many people here. My trusty generator is just sitting and waiting to go to work.
