Where to go in Belize?

Anyone ever been there? Seems like there a quite a few choices.
TIA,
Christian.

There is someone on one of the forums I frequent that lives in Belize. What are you looking for?

Belize is great. Most popular water action happens out of Ambergris Key. If you go there don't stay in town. You may need a boat ride to stay further out on the key as I haven't been back there in over 10yrs. Staying in town means listening to the small airport noise. 15-25min small boat ride is no prob getting back to town for a walk around.

If it's just a snorkeling trip search the whole Carib as some places are more doable for the tourist. An experienced free diver should not have trouble with the rough waters on the ocean side of the reef where the action is.

Belize also has great bird watching if that's your thing.

If you fly into Belize City and have to kill a couple of hours before the next small plane ride there is a gentleman's club close by.

I stayed on Ambergris Caye for 9 days and loved it. No real need to go into town other than to load up on beer. I stayed at Belize Beach Villas and had a fantastic relazing vacation. We did take a boat tour through the jungle with a stop at a jungle spa - very nice.

No kidding that looks nice! How do you get there, fly into Belize from the USA then take a small plane to Ambergris Caye? Do you need transportation or can you walk everywhere?

hey guys..

nothings' cheap anywhere. The point being that as long as you're down there you could split your time up among 2 or 3 islands for just a cheap small plane airfare.

How great Belize is depends on what turns you on..

meanwhile the nicest time of the year in Belize is May although the herds of lobster migrations may be in Jan ?

I was in Belize City a month ago as a stopover on a cruise ship. The town itself reminds you of a 3rd world country. I only took a 2 hour walk and then left due to all the rude vendors chasing me down.

Some on the cruise ship passenders took rides into the jungle and mountains. Most reported crappy roads and a very poor economy. I've heard of great snorkeling, but didn't see it myself. I don't pretend to be an expert from my brief visit....Pick your hotel carefully....

It is a 3rd world country

w/English court system, mandatory uniformed schools, etc and England's Harrier fighter jets that were, maybe still are, docked at the airport. Also all investment US $ for real estate etc was guaranteed by the US Gov't. I've been looking at buying in for over 10ys as it's the best in the Carib for my act. It's very safe away from Belize City. Old info is that total population is/was around 200,000 because residents leave to find work in other countries.

The book "Jaguar" is about the jungle cats in Belize.

back on topic.. if you're looking for a funky vacation country at a nice resort stay in Ambergris Key outside of town. May is the best month as winds die down and the fish are plentiful. Much better oceansand fish than other Carib countries.

all above a prejudicial rant.

Used to go there years ago for diving and the seafood. Excellent on both. Ron knows more current info than I do but its well worth looking at but REMEMBER that this is not S. Miami and it is a 3rd world country.
