Krav Maga - hype or not?

Not looking to be in the UFC or anything like that. Just trying to add variety to my exercise regimen. Running and cycling in the rain sucks. Running and cycling in the gym can get boring.

Is Krav Maga for real or is it like TKD; chock full of endless, repetitive katas? I couldn't care less about belt testing and mysticism. I just want a great all-around workout. The self defense part is a bonus.

It's fantastic. Haven't done it myself but know some people who have, it is not only a super workout but possibly the most practical self-defense training I have ever heard of in the sense that you do not have to study for ages to become proficient at kicking ass. (Defensively, of course).

The friend who did it was already in elite-class athlete shape and praised the intensity of the workout, + he was the person least in need of self-defense training that I know and praised the skills that he learned in that area. I am considering doing it myself, the strikes sound earily familiar to the Japanese karate that I studied for a while. (Mas Oyama).

Krav Maga is really Israelie Special Forces hand to hand combat training. My neighbor has taken several years of training and is proficient enough to be an instructor.

they teach it at my gym and i can tell you it looks like the real deal. 'real world' practicality..they do a little bit of everything, honestly and everyone is drenched when they're through..including me just from watching. it isn't for the lazy or weak..they get after it. i've taken kung fu before, but if i was going to take up another self defense class, this would be the one for sure. gets my vote.

Krav has got a great marketing machine. If you are looking for a workout, go for it. If you really think that you'll be able to defend yourself against a knowledgeable knife fighter or a gun, forget it.

I want to learn how to kill men by simply staring at them. Will Krav Maga help me with this? I need new skills.

yes they do work on techniques for taking away a gun or knife. they don't guarantee its success. guess they should stop trying altogether. lol.

Not that i'm some expert, but IMO any martial arts system, boxing, or even good ole' fashioned street fighting is effective...if the guy employing the system can actually fight.

If you're a gifted athelete, any system has moves in it that will really mess an oppenent up quickly, so IMO it's a matter of preference. If you like to kick, take Tae Kwon Do. If you like to wrassle, Gracie Ju Jitsu is unbeatable(1v1), if you're short and stocky Win Chung is a great system, etc, etc.

If a person is a 'wimp', has poor reflexes, cant take pain/punches, it doesnt really matter what system they do, they're going to get beat up anyway. LOL.

For my part i prefer Tai Chi.(especially with a sword, but that's a whole nother topic)

Some good points here, but the bottom line is that anyone can improve their self-defense skills and fitness, (unless you are the world champion reading this).

Most men, (~90%?), have never hit another person in their life. Or at least since grade school. When you go into the rougher neighborhoods or a nightclub full of macho alpha-dog types, the percentage might be a little higher, but still you would be surprised how many "tough guys" have no real skills. If they are not totally dominating or knocking someone weaker than them out w/ one punch, they run out of skills in a hurry. I worked for quite a while in nightclubs, including the door, and I've seen more fights and blood than I ever wanted to. I've seen tiny guys, (150 lbs.), completely frustrate the schit out of 220 lb. muscle ****** "tough guys", if not outright kick their asses. And I've just seen horribly dirty fighting, 2/3/4 on one, etc...

You could do a lot worse than Krav Magna, IMO, and anything that improves fitness, health and confidence is a positive thing. Even if it's kicking a soccer ball around.

it's not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog.
