Hopefully that'll reduce that salty taste of sea water.

I remember my Science teacher, Scientists, and the media telling us we were heading for an Ice age back in 1977. Its rather amazing how this planets climate can make such a huge swing so quickly.

That was probably based on the ravings of the wacky Stanford University professor Paul Ehrlich. He's the guy who wrote "The Population Bomb", predicting worldwide mass starvation from overpopulaiton, starting in the early 1990's.

Some of his bonehead predictions:
* "The battle to feed humanity is over. In the 1970s the world will undergo famines . . . hundreds of millions of people (including Americans) are going to starve to death." (1968)
* "Smog disasters" in 1973 might kill 200,000 people in New York and Los Angeles. (1969)
* "I would take even money that England will not exist in the year 2000." (1969)
* "Before 1985, mankind will enter a genuine age of scarcity . . . in which the accessible supplies of many key minerals will be facing depletion." (1976)

Oh no. Can't happen. Bush's oh-so-objective "scientists" say it's all a myth and it's way over-blown. Plus the Bible sez that man in in charge of the earth and there's no way Gawd would give us a gift that could potentially go bad on us, right? Just bury your nose in scripture and head in the sand of zealotry. You'll be fine. Plus Al Gore's a liberal and can't possibly be right.

It would have been my wish that Bush and his fellow cultists had just shut up about environmental sciences, since they're so bad that they tarnish anything of which they speak.

However, the Global Warming Industry is mostly built on bunk.

Try JunkScience.com for genuine information, for starters.

If the floating ice melts, isn't the displacement the same?
Similarly, but different, the successful "Save the Whales" campaign has resulted in higher sea levels.

Yes, because there you can hear opinions of people like this...

here's (in part) the scoop on Mr. Singer, as an example of the "experts" available on that site:

In 1994, Singer was Chief Reviewer of the report Science, economics, and environmental policy: a critical examination published by the Alexis de Tocqueville Institution (AdTI). This was all part of an attack on EPA regulation on environmental tobacco smoke funded by the Tobacco Institute. [6] At that time, Mr. Singer was a Senior Fellow with AdTI. [7]

"The report's principal reviewer, Dr Fred Singer, was involved with the International Center for a Scientific Ecology, a group that was considered important in Philip Morris' plans to create a group in Europe similar to The Advancement for Sound Science Coalition (TASSC), as discussed by Ong and Glantz. He was also on a tobacco industry list of people who could write op-ed pieces on "junk science," defending the industry's views."

Yep, thanks for that Mr. Singer - we all now know the wisdom of your words: Second hand smoke never hurt nobody - why that's just "JUNK SCIENCE"....

Hm... I wonder who gets more financial mileage out of the discussion on global warming? Seems if I were to pick the profitable angle, I'd jump on the "junk science" campaign, I'd be much more in demand as a (very rare) speaker against human impact than the throngs speaking about human impact....

Yes, by the definition of displacement I would have to say you are correct. The problem would be that reducing the surface area of the ice is going to reduce the amount of energy reflect back into space and increase the rate of heating which will melt more ice (and not just the floating ice - Greenland is losing alot of its ice now).

I think the "2040" prediction is fear-mongering, but there is some disturbing data out there on the rate of melting, etc.

we may get an ice age yet out of global warming
current idea is as heat melts the ice
the alantic warms and the deep cold return flow
of the gulf stream [call the alantic converyer]
shuts down and with it the warm gulf stream stops
and then the ice age returns

major question is how quick this happens

What's that old joke about when you die and go to heaven, the French do the cooking, the Italians make the clothes, English greet you, Germans organize everything, etc..

In hell, the French greet you, the English do the cooking, the Germans make the clothes and the Italians organize everything.

In the 21st century, the Republicans were in charge of environmental policy.

I think he is on to something here. All we have to do to counteract the effect of the melting ice is to kill off all the whales.
