Wal-Mart and Guns

Both Wal-Marts in town stopped selling firearms 4 months ago. I wonder what the real reason was?

Could it be because Wal Mart is going "green?" Nah!

Stopped selling them in many areas years ago. One of the major reasons why I never buy anything, no matter the price, in Wal-Mart.

I assume for the same reason WM would stop selling anything else-not making enough profit. Also extra training needed for the salesman to comply with FFl regulations, after 20 years of doing 4473's I'm still learning.

The ONLY thing I buy at Walmart is ammo, 'cause it's cheap!

$4.63 for a box of fifty 9mm range ammo, in re-loadable brass, is a good deal.

Firearm buyers are fickle. Most, even my redneck, hunting type friends, would not buy a firearm at Wal-Mart. However, people who are not firearm owners but that want to get a present for a friend or relative do buy at Wal-Mart due to price and convenience.

I would suspect that if a Wal-Mart stops selling, it is purely money motivated. They probably cannot use their monopsonistic power to get a dirt cheap price on the firearms - it's not like they can have kids in El Salvador make up a boat-load of Cathy Lee shotguns.

Plus there is there record keeping requirements of the ATF. Additional employee training, and additional resources to properly file and store the paperwork could make firearms a no-profit item for them.

Last time I looked (last weekend), the cheapest 9mm ammo at walmart was about $8 or $9. I was comparing it to their price on .380 ACP due to a previous thread about cheapest caliber. Their cheapest .380 ACP was $11 or $12. Ammo prices have gone thru the roof recently across the board.

Wally World sold the best value in waterfowling guns bar none. The Beretta 3901, which was a 'stripped' version of the 390. It was a synthetic stocked gun, reliable as the day is long and cost a whopping $525 (sometimes even cheaper!).

Other than that i stick with my local guy who does several million a year in gross sales out of a large shed next to his house.
