WHY... do some drivers do this ?

Making a right turn ( in a car/ suv / pu ) they swing to the left before they make their turn.
You know, so if your in the lane to their left and passing, you wonder WTF, are they coming over or what ??

skipdup 12-14-2006 03:20 PM

I notice this everytime I drive. Drive me NUTS!!!!!!!!!!!

scottmandue 12-14-2006 03:25 PM

Drives me nuts too, especially people in tiny economy cars doing it.

HELLO, your not driving a eighteen wheeler!!!

Rick V 12-14-2006 03:27 PM

NJ is the worst place on the planet for doing this.

That's because they have friggin jughandles and no one knows whether or not to go left to go left or go right to go left till the last second.

I nearly kill entire towns when I have to drive in Jersey.

They're just trying to hit the apex right.

Bob's Flat-Six 12-14-2006 04:23 PM

Maybe these drivers all went to Kramer's hook and ladder driving school ?

Eric Coffey 12-14-2006 04:54 PM

Man, there seems to be even more idiots out there this time of year (holiday shopping season) too.

Here are a few other ultra-annoying driver pet-peeves:

1.) staying in the right lane to go straight (at a red light when you/others need to make a right turn). If you aren't turning right, get at least one lane over if possible!!

2.) When people ride your A$$ or aggressively overtake when you purposely slow for an approaching red light (as to catch the light and not have to stop). This is especially rewarding if you are coming up on a red light where there is nobody in front of you. The guy behind you overtakes and comes to a stop at the light (in the other lane). When the light turns green you are still in gear and accelerate briskly, leaving the other guy in the dust. God I love that!

3.) People who slow down to enter the center turn lane. Just signal, get over, THEN slow for your turn!

4.)Dip$hits who insist on keeping their windows down with their music blaring/bumping at stoplights. I mean did these idiots not get enough attention growing up? "Look at me and my bumpin' stereo yo." If you truly just liked loud music, there would be no reason to have every window in your vehicle rolled all the way down.

5.) Fast lane "stragglers". These are people who think they know the fastest possible speed that others should travel, and/or have no clue of the "slower cars stay right" rule.

6.) Idiots that missed their turn-lane/whatever, flip their signal on, and wedge their car's nose over, blocking 1 or more lanes of thru-traffic. If you made the mistake of not paying attention to where you are going, then go down one street and make a U-turn or whatever it takes to keep traffic flowing. It was your mistake, don't make others pay for it!

OK, idiot-driver rant over for now. :D

many944s 12-14-2006 05:16 PM

Here in the Midwest, we call that a "farmer turn". That way they can make a turn without dumping the corn or beans from the bins behind the tractor! Unfortunately, they do it in their cars too!!

On my way to work today (on foot), another pedestrian pulled this manuever, almost banging into me (on his left) as he then swung into a shop on the right. Imy first thought was "stupid driver."

Tervuren 12-14-2006 06:09 PM

Whats so wrong with it? I do this quite often in the 944 when turning onto other roads. I go to the far side of my lane, then turn in. I make a lot of my right hand turns without touching the brake beforehand. Sometimes though, I take it tighter and slow so I can step it out slightly on exit. EIther way is fun, carrying a lot of speed in is more dangerous, and I've got to have run off and no oncoming traffic just incase something goes wrong.

I'm a guilty of #1 on several traffic lights in the area, can blast to the front row from a mid pack or rear position. When I do do this, I'm watching traffic behind me. o many people don't use their blinkers though, its frustrating to me when someone I could of let by turns right without their blinker once the light turned green, if they'de just had their blinker on, I'd of gotten out of their way.

In my F150 (extended cab with 6.5' bed), I have to do this pulling onto residential streets because the sidewalk comes to a point at what I would want to be the apex of the turn, and my alternatives are to make a slight left before turning right or to hit oncoming traffic.

john walker's workshop 12-14-2006 06:27 PM

35mph freeway entrance ramp speed, then go way down to the end of the on-ramp before moving onto the freeway.

2 lanes on the entrance ramp. one for high occupancy vehicles. the HO vehicles try to pass you up the ramp, but end up right next to you at the top of the ramp where the 2 lanes merge into one. i tend to move left when i see this coming to prevent a problem. there oughta be a law!

last night a jerk pulled out of a parking space on the right as i was approaching at 40mph, and promptly pulled a u-turn in front of me, then stopped with his azz half way in my lane to avoid a car coming in the other direction. crikey!

There you have it -- the reason NJ has a bad rap about driving is because of all the freakin' New York drivers in our state!

If you'll notice stomachmonkey's location under his avatar - It's NY. :p

Don't like how we drive? Get out of my state, you freakin tourist!

Yea, I'm off my meds again...

That I understand. It's the Camarys that drive me NUTS!!!!!

450knotOffice 12-14-2006 08:02 PM

I think many of these people are trying to hit a late apex. If you look at the age and sex of these drivers, I'll bet you're loking at 18 to 30 year old males who try to take every tun as if they're on a track.

That's just what I've noticed anyway.

CJFusco 12-14-2006 08:02 PM

The one thing that really really drives me nuts lately is the impatient jerk that rolls forward when he THINKS that his red light will be turning green. Sometimes the light doesn't turn green when he thinks it's going to, and he ends up in the middle of the intersection with the oncoming cars trying to take left turns around him.

For some reason I get a big kick out of it when someone rolls forward into an intersection in anticipation of a green light and then has to stop completely and wait... especially when I do it better and drive right past them when the light turns green and my reaction time is 100% better than theirs.

That are no where near their adhesion limits - actually most any car is probably no where near it's adhesion limit during these turns. It is the street after all and not a race track.

Converse is true in TX, where people who have a green light essentially stop before making a right turn.
