DISCOVER Card: The Wost ****** Crooks!

So 2 months ago I call them up and specifically ask an account manager my balance and when I have to pay by to close my account and bring balance to zero..

So I do that, send in a payment of $3919

to my surprise , i get another statement, balance is $33.50

WTF!!??

so I call them up and I told them the story, and said I'm not paying because I did everything they wanted...she said they have no record of my last call.. BS!

and she threatened me, saying if I don't pay, it will go against my credit report. wow!

obviously it's a small amount of money so I can't sue.. What can I do realistically?

Just pay it off?

Fu'cking crooks! were charging me interest rate of 28% !!!!

From the time you talked to them to the time they cashed the cheque, time had elapsed and iterest accrued (most likely). Even though you talked to someone, at that moment the balance owing was probably as he stated but you can't trust these guys; you have to go into a branch and pay it right at the teller to get it paid "there and then".

Always ask for a ref number and the name and emp # of who you talk to. Sounds like a pain but it has saved me $ in the past.

Get a name and end of account figure. Ask for a supervisor and write down their name and badge number. It tends to make people more accountable.

Thanks! I guess people's words are never good these days.

You always have to get it in writing...that's a lot more work and aggrivation.

I'll probably just pay the $33 because I have no choice.

Discover chapped my ass once. I had my account PAID OFF... The some 'card protection' program charged NINE DOLLARS to my account. This was some program/option thing I had CANCELLED earlier in the year, since I found they were billing me periodically, and I had no freakin clue what it was.

Anyway... they ended up getting pissy with me about that $9 since I was late paying it.

They put that on my credit report!!! It came up later in the year when I was trying to get a limit increase on another card. That pissed me off!!

Unfortunately I have balance on the card now, but I'm working hardcore toward getting all my CCs payed off... then I'll keep ONE. I think the Discover will NOT be the one I keep.

Pay it.

And next time, ask for a "payment in full amount" for payment received by such-and-such a date and a zero-balance letter, and to indicate your account "closed at customer's request in good standing with zero balance" on your credit reports.

If you pay by check, call THE DAY YOUR CHECK CLEARS, and get them to fax or email a statement showing a 0 balance.

When I get around to paying off and closing accounts, I will be doing such.

Every time I have gotten a late fee or a finance charge for paying my bill online a day or two after the due date, I have called and asked them to waive the fee. Every single time they have done it. Just ask them nicely and even offer to reopen or keep open your account if they waive it. Then just cut the card up and close your account a few mos. later. $33 as a derog. on your credit report ain't gonna hurt you. We don't even require people to pay off medical collections, no matter how much they owe and we don't require any other judgement below $5k to be paid off. Ironically, if you get some phat collections on your credit report and ignore them for a while, they actually can go away. If you start making sporadic payments years after they're reporter delinquent, the whole problem can come back to life.
