Hunters - TV

My father-in-law has a TV show airing Thursday evening on Versus (formerly Outdoor Life Network) called "Whitetail Challenge".

It airs at 7:00 PM EST and again at 11:00 PM EST.

Channel 608 on DirecTV.

I hope this plug breaks no rules. Just thought some of the deer hunters might be interested.

Aerkuld - right. We preferr our tail to have a slight tan, even in the middle of winter.

I'll try and check it out. Does he have his own ranch or something?

As long as he isn't one of those annoying guys he'll be alright. Some of those guys bug the crap out of me.

Is he predominatly rifle or bow?

Is it just one hunt or is he getting his own show?

pookie- He does have a ranch in S. TX.

I know what you mean about the annoying ones. But, the FIL is actually a great guy. One of the nicest people I have ever met.

Not sure what the show will focus on, but I know he prefers rifle.

This is sort of the preliminary show for the series (filming now) which will air early next year. My wife's hunt this weekend will be filmed and she's hoping it might make it on the show.

Strangely, I haven't received my invitation yet... something about a face for radio???

Vash- Yeah, she's the eldest of three girls. So, she grew up hunting and fishing. Loves it. Plus, she's a sweet heart.

I always remember she's a better shot than me. Keeps me "honest".

Also, Versus was recently known as OLN (Outdoor Life Network). Not really sure how inclusive a cable package would need to be to include this channel... but my mid-range DTV includes it, so it must not be too obscure.

I kind of fail to see how shooting a deer with a high powered rifle is a "challenge"

Seems a bow and arrow might be more sporting

Yeah ranch in TX you did good. I have a buddy of mine who is a really avid hunter, I mean I hunt but he huuunts. Anyways one of the things I will always remember him saying is that some people marry for money, he married for land.

Nostril Cheese-shooting anything with a scoped rifle at a short distance 100 yards and in is not much of a challenge. Shooting at a moving animal at greater distances while monitoring your breathing so as not to throw the shot off is. Bow hunting is much more challenging than rifle hunting as the prey must be much closer to assure a good shot. I assume from the picture skipdup put up that there was also some amount of tracking that went on before that animal was taken.

Texas Trophy Hunters Association founder.

I'm curious to know who is behind the show.
I used to work for some deer nuts, mainly those who were interested in the privatization of white tail deer. This show most likely has the support of those on the other side of the high "fence".

Matt- Shows what I know.

Actually, no one else behind the show. FIL is actually an authority in his own right. He founded NorthAmerican Whitetail magazine, the associated regional publications (Texas Sportsman for us & West Virginia Game and Fish for pookie) and has written several book on the subject. He's really a neat guy.

I enjoyed the show, thank you for bringing it to my attention.

All 4 hunters nailed a buck, free handed. Good lord did they bring some cannons though. A 7mm, 2 300 mags, .338 (maybe it was a .308), blowing 180 grain or there abouts. With the possible exception of Larry's deer, they all dropped like a load of bricks!

I was a bit dissatisfied with the quality of deer, I hoped to see results at least in the 150-160 class. It was a helluva alot better than watching the canned hunts that produce larger deer though. On top of that, it has to be damned hard to kill anything when you have a camera man in tow. Given that the hunt was not in ideal weather conditions, and nowhere near the rut, I thought they did very good to bag what they did.

The YTurria ranch damned sure has alot bucks, and must have an azzload of deer. They chopper surveyed what, 130 mature bucks over 5500 acres? My guess is that ranch is MLD3, or it should be if it isn't.

Olivia Angelloz, what a great asset for a hunting show.

Cool Matt, glad you liked.

I believe that ranch is about an hour away from the in-laws ranch.

I was a bit surprised by the size of the deer as well. But like you said, lots a factors involved.

I'll probably post something before the regular series starts next year.

So was your FIL on there? Was his last name Butler? That is the guy I liked, he had a two second clip and managed to say, well I don't care what these morons are doing I know that I would do this.....

I liked the show, I liked the idea of having them hunt on the ground instead of sitting in stands all day. I liked the contest aspect of it.

I dislike Jeff Foxworthy, he just annoys me now. And the only other thing I disliked about it is that they repeated themselves so much, why were here, this is what we are going to do, were at this ranch. They showed the picture of the guy closing the gate on the ranch at least 4 times. And they didn't show the GPS spots clearly enough when they were scouting. Watching all four of them at the same time you couldn't really see where they went.

I did like it though and would watch it again. I think just because it was different than any other hunting shows at the moment. It just needs some wrinkles ironed out.

...
No. FIL was the co-host with Jeff Foxworthy. Last name Morris.

You know, re: Foxworthy... I wasn't really a fan until I got to spend some time with him hunting at the in-laws ranch. I can't say I really "know" him, but I have been around him on several occasions. He seriously seems like one of the nicest, most gracious people I have ever met. Really a terrific guy - his younger brother even more so. In fact, his business manager and ranch manager were the same. Anyway, I like him MUCH better now. And, in person, the guy is seriously funny - I don't care who you are or whether you like the redneck stuff or not - just FUNNY.

I too was a little disappointed by the GPS representation... that could have been very cool. Oh well, what do I know...

I think the '07 series is supposed to be quite different from this show. I'll try and find out over the holidays what the story is...

Glad that you enjoyed it overall . I really hope the show does well.

Sit perfectly motionless in a freezing cold tree stand in a steady freezing drizzle for 5 hours (before you even see a deer), and you might gain a greater understanding of the challenge.

It aint like they run right up to you...

Hi Skip,
I watched the show last night and I enjoyed it. Having the GPS track of the day's hunts etc. was unique and interesting. Having Olivia D' Angelos as co-host was nice. She's quite a hunter and nice to look at too.
