Merry Christmas - You're Fired

We got a newly elected Prosecutor in November who had told us assistant prosecutors that we were going to be retained. Now it turns out that he just wanted to keep us around to keep the place running until he takes over Jan 1. Me and the other assistants have now been told "You are not going to be part of the new team." My last day is Dec. 31. Quite the Christmas present. Not sure what the hell I am going to do as I loved this job and had planned on sticking around for quite a while.

I'm a bit in shock as I really didn't plan on looking for a new job at my age (51). Fortunately, back when he won the primary in August I started saving money like mad if for some reason I was fired. So things should be ok for a few months, but the thought of having to look for a new job sucks bigtime!

Kurt, sorry to hear about this... especially the timing. Sometimes things are for the best, though. I'm sure you'll land on your feet.

Crap! That really sucks, Kurt. At 51!

Hope it works out in the long run. I suppose you donīt have a bunch of small kids still living at home, to support ?

Sorry to hear that Kurt--My sister in law was told two days ago that her position is being eliminated...next Friday is her last day. As you said, quite the Christmas present. Hang in there.
Christian.

Prosecutor? As in an attorney? What about going to the other side - defense?

Hey, I have got the BIG Meeting at 3:00 this afternoon! We merged two years ago and I survived the first two rounds of firings. My number is up and I hope they offer me something decent. Maybe not..

Management in a Fortune 200 firm is the same as with gorillas or monkeys. Once the new boss is in charge they are going to drive off or kill any and all competition.

Wow, that's awful. The timing is especially bad. I'm sorry to hear that, man.

It's the same with Hollywood. The neighbor next door is a writer for "Days of Our Lives." New producer came in with his own writers, so the neighbor is out in Jan.

He's used to it, though. This has happened once before to my neighbor on the same show.

Wow, that's low - even from a lawyer.

In difficulty lies opportunity. . . I hope that you have strength and comfort in what is undoubtedly a difficult time and that you are eventually able to pick yourself up, dust yourself off and turn a negative into a positve for yourself.

Have you considered going into practice for yourself? Might be the perfect opportunity. . .

Hang tight and be strong - hope it all works out okay for you. Sorry to hear what happened, but just don't let it get you down.

Kurt,

Sorry to hear that. I had the same thing happen last year and have stayed on my feet the last 18 months. Its not been easy but the bills are paid and so far things are looking very good but the future went out the window.

Will say a prayer for you and yours this holiday season.

Joe

I'm sorry for your misfortune, Kurt. I remember when you made the move to the Prosecutor's office. I hope the new year brings a better opportunity for you. Hang in there, and enjoy the family during the holidays and try not to stress to much. You could be worst off. Good luck.

Ha! I was thinking the exact same thing! Sorry, Kurt. That's shabby treatment that no one should be subjected to. I hope it's only a small bump in the road.

I have an employee who will be getting "the gift of freedom" on Dec 22, unless his attitude improves significantly in the next week.

Thanks for all the support! Yes I could go back to private practice, but it will be like starting all over again.

I'll keep you all updated with my (mis)adventures as things progress. I am not going to let it interfere with Christmas!

I myself will be getting the 'gift of freedom' 12/22, but it's not a surprise, just the end of my contract. I've few irons in the fire; if those don't pan out, I'll have a lot of time on my hands to finish the ghia...

Another group of contractors here got a really nice gift - an average 25% pay cut!

Counselor: Get yourself some purple cowboy boots and a GIANT belt buckle and a bola tie and hang out a shingle as a specialist in "light criminal" matters.

Here's the thing. Human nature being what it is, there is a strong propensity for people to transgress the boundaries of the law with predictable frequency. Hold yourself out as an expert in DUI, Family Court Matters, misdemeanor assaults, traffic matters etc., and you may find that you ring the bell so often you need an associate.

I'm not talking about heavy monster satanic cult stuff or protracted show trials, just run-of-the-mill, "lighten your wallet, ease your mind" matters. . . and remember the three rules of criminal law:

a) Get the money up front;
b) Get the money up front; and
c) Get the money up front.

Who knows, maybe one of these days you could do a nice pro bono piece for one of the simian lawyer-bashers who hang out here!

Good luck and as my prelaw advisor used to say. . . "Persevere!"

Very sorry to hear that, Kurt.

Losing a job you like is one thing, but being lied to is despicable. Any chance your group has accumulated vacation/sick leave? Would serve the guy right if you all exited immediately to begin a job search.
