Daughter driving from San Francisco to Malibu

our daughter is driving from San FRancisco to Malibu. She is going to be coming down the 101 south. Is the 27 State Highway the best route to get to Mailbu?? She then needs to get back to the 405 South to Orange County taking the 27 to the 101 to the 405. Does anyone know a better way?? This is going to be on Friday evening. I have warned her about traffic. I don't think it makes sense to get her over to Interstate 5 and then cut back across to the 101. Thoughts??

Tell her to take 101 all the way down... at one point she will cross some hills just south of Camarillo...at that point, about 10 miles down is Las Virgenes Rd. Tell her to get off at that exit, and take that windy road around the mountains down to Malibu. Its about 7 miles from the 101 through Las Virgenes down to Mailbu...very easy and sort of scenic drive. When she gets to Malibu, Las Virgenes Rd. will be called Malibu Canyon Rd and she will pass Pepperdine University on her Right...this will take her directly to PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) where if she turns Right will take her to North Malibu and to the Left, will take her into the main part of Malibu and South on to Santa Monica....this is the more logical way to go but make sure she checks MapQuest first.

She could also take Highway 27...which is also known as Topanga Canyon...however that road is much further South on the 101 from Las Virgenes and will take her down to the Southern part of Malibu, closer to Santa Monica... Its also a much windier road and I wouldnt recommend it in the dark at night...
In addition to this...there is not a clear cut way for her to get to 27 from the 101...she would need to exit on Ventura Blvd...take that down about 1 mile, then turn right on to Topanga Canyon Rd...go down about 4 miles until it gets out of the residental section...at which point it turns into a twisty, dark, mountain road for about 10 miles down to Malibu....
I completely would not recommend this to someone who is not familar with the area.

To get to OC from Malibu...just tell her to take PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) South through Santa Monica, at which point it will split and she will want to veer to the Left to get on the 10 Freeway...she will be on the 10 for about 2.5 miles and it will then take her right to the 405 South...this is MUCH easier than the route that you suggested above...

OK...here is a pic of Las Virgenes Rd. and Mullholland Dr. in a scene from the movie "Its a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad (etc.) World"

Here is the 101 freeway leading up to the Las Virgenes exit

Here is what she will see in Malibu, if it were daylight and 40 years ago

Is she driving by herself all in one night? It's four hundred miles, I know it is possible but maybe not very comfortable (Done S.F. to L.A. many times but with co-drivers)

Las Virgenes Rd is a grest way to cut accross from 101 to 1 (PCH).

they all look pretty much the same today, just more cars...

avoid the 23 and the 27.

Take the las Virgenes road exit to PCH.

I have also cut from the 5 to the 101 via the 41 but that road runs pretty much through th middle of f***ing nowhere, pretty country in the daytime. If you follow the 41 all the way to the coast it dumps you right into Morro bay... one of my favorite central coast hang outs. Many of my SF to LA runs got detoured to that local.

I've done this drive more times than I'd like to admit.

For speed, I-5 is about 1hr faster than 101. Friday will be a very busy day.

Once you get to the LA basin, instead of taking 405, I strongly recommend taking 210 around the top, then down 57 to 55 (depending on where in OC she is going).

When I have time, 101 and 1 are very pretty and am happy to do it. When I'm in a hurry, I-5 to 210 is the ticket.

Ahhh, to be able to pluck the '62 Plymouth ragtop from that first pic....drop in a period correct 413, and then go looking for fuel injected stingrays.

yeah...just take the 5 down to the 126, then across to Ventura and going back the other way...

101 is much more fun...but will probably take a couple hours longer.

Malibu is more fun than Ventura too...

I just did Sacramento to Ventura Friday afternoon. As described, 5 to the 126. Traffic was heavy, but moved pretty well for the most part.

Hope she did as well.

She made it safe! SF to Orange county via Ventura.
8 Hours, no speeding tickets. zshe did have a scare from a CHP. Tailed her for 2 miles, Natasha was going 70 (slower than the flow of traffic) he finally pulled beside her and over the speaker ordered her to slow down. I guess the CHP is wary of 19-20 year old drivers. Maybe the licence plate frame "11/99 Foundation helped out. The foundation helps widows and children of fallen CHP officers amongst other things. I am a lifetime member.

Oh, by the way the daughter made an executive decision and took the 405 south...........no traffic at the time she passed through, go figure.

Ordered her to slow down... from seventy? Or maybe he clocked her before she slowed down to seventy? Jeeze I cruise around at eighty most of the time (when traffic allows) but being a middle aged white guy in a Hyundai probable helps (not that there is anything wrong with that).

Glad to hear she made it safe.

Merry Christmas
