New Ducati Motorcycle, Price?
My spendaholic brother is telling me he is putting down a deposit on a new Ducati bike that is suppose to by the shiznit of bikes. I know squat about bikes, but I do know my brother. Any knowledgeable bikers out there have a clue what he is referring to?

That name sounds like the one he is talking about. Chances are he is also going for the "Tricolor" one. Hopefully, the extra $10k isn't for the paint job.

I had a 750SS once. Loved that bike, but ended up selling it to pay for a wedding (refer to 'Problems with former wife' thread to see what a waste of a good bike that was).
I love Ducati's bikes, there is just something about them...artistic is probably the right word, plus they have the sound of the V-twin and performance too!

He should really consider maintainence cost on the Ducati! They run about $800.00 for EVERY service!

I have 2 ducs right now and they are very inexpensive to run...not like a honda but more akin to driving a porsche instead of a honda. They are alot different than having a honda |

maintenance on the Duc can be a real pain in the wallet( or in the butt if you do it yourself). They really are the supermodels of motorcycling, high maintenance, *****y, but every second in the saddle is worth it.

NickG,
I beg to differ with you! I work in the m/c industry and Ducati service cost is astronomical compaired to any metric bike!

my oil change is like $80...valve adjustment was 300...how's a 911 valve adjustment gonna hurt? it's the old saying, if you play, you pay. besides, Ducs are just a differnt kind of bike, and different types of people gravitate to them, I would not own a Jap sport bike again (i have 2 rz350's and a rz500) they just are not my style anymore. I don't want to imply thyat they are not great bikes (they are awesome) but i like soul in my bikes
do you work for a duc dealer? bet not...most guys who work at a jap dealer spout off on that tangent because they are ignorant....after 03 the valve adjustment interval went to 7500 miles and last year they went to 12000 miles. my oil filter cost $8, oil about 60(I use factory Duc stuff) The Desmo valves need more attention sure...but you would know that if you had bought one or were looking to buy one. it's like a ferrari...they are stunning, but they cost. Aren't harley's similar in cost ? yea...fyi ,they are

ducati.com website
I copied this from their website. I guess that maintenance costs have been an issue!
More news 13 November 2006 50% LESS MAINTENANCE COST ON EVERY 2007 DUCATI Ducati is proud to announce that all 2007 Ducati models require less frequent service, less parts and labor during each service and, as a result, greatly reduced scheduled maintenance costs—by as much as 50%. Reducing the cost of service is one way to measure the new quality of Ducati. It also contributes immensely to making the Ducati ownership experience as satisfying as the Ducati riding experience. Research and development is the top priority at Ducati. This investment in performance and quality includes our factory processes, machinery and the people who build each Ducati. By engineering-in quality through design, materials and testing, Ducati owners will enjoy significant and quantifiable improvements in every Ducati motorcycle. To a rider, the best measure of quality is the riding experience. You can feel a new smoothness to the legendary Ducati L-Twin, a more progressive nature to the powerful brakes, and more confident road holding in every turn. Reliability and quality—one ride is all the proof you will need. 50% less maintenance cost—100% Ducati—standard equipment in every 2007 model.

The latest Motorcyclist has a review of the new 1098.
It would be a massive understatement to say that they liked it. Oh, and I agree, the 999's styling was terrible. The 1098 is just sex on two (2) wheels. Stunning.

![]() do you even know anything about Ducati's? prolly not, what they did was change the material they use for the valve shims and rocker arms to a different spec to have the adjustment last longer. (something that was available to owners years ago) last i checked a full service on an r1 was aroung a grand..oil change was over 125, further it is a 12k service same as the duc...hondas don't need to have the valves serviced until 24k and then they are big $; how much is a 911 valve adjust? 1200? depends where you take it right? how's the warranty on a new honda? 1 year 12k?, my ducs both had 2 year unlimited mileage...hows the resale on your honda? yea i thought so. My 1000ss is worth withing 1000 of what i paid for it 3 years ago....can't name a jap bike like that can you? and that is TRADE value. My monster 620 cost 5995, at 12k miles, i can sell it tomorrow for 4000...literally, if i hold out i will get closer to 5000. what's a 4 year old sv650 worth with 12k? 2000? they both cost nearly the same new. how about an rc51..14k new...you would be lucky to sell it for 6 now , cbr1000rr? 12k new? 1 year later? 8k..r1, 12-14k new? 1 year later maybe 9500. i can go on and on. Am I defending Ducati? sure, because ignorant people like you are too stupid to see things the way they are. All of the bikes today are great, it doesn't matter where it was made. You and YOU alone should decide what you want, if you want cheap, buy a chinese bike. I prefer to get something that has value a few years down the road rather than a toss away bike. and if you really want to compare apples to apples, how much was the r1 with the special edition setup...ohlins forks, brembo brakes, marchesini wheels, michelin pilots? over 25 grand...both my ducs had these standard and if i add both together(03 monster 620, 03 1000ssds), i still would have enough to buy another new monster 620 and they all have that stuff standard. Nick, I'm not trying to be a smart ass, but you are a real oximoron! You state that you own a VW because of the low cost associated, but you own (2) high cost Ducati's? The 911's are as easy to work on as a VW and that's why most of the guys buy them!

Personally, I'd rather have the Suzuki GSXR 1000 that kicks the duc's ass in superbike! Oil change is $40 bucks w/parts and labor, full service with valve adjustment is $210.00.
Feliz Navidad!

NickG, you are right about the whole "pay to play" argument, but beyond that you are babbling like a fool. I am a major Ducati fan, but no MC in history that I can think of has taken as big of a schit depreciation-wise as the current (2006) Superbike.
Pity the poor schmuck who bought a brand new 999S last summer for ~$25k+ taxes and registration, and now dealers are blowing them out for $10k off of list?? WTF is his used one worth now? And don't tell me that it would be better for him in the spring, then the 1098 will actually be out and available. It might be worse. If someone bought a 999R for $32k in '06 and parked it in their living room, it is now worth *maybe* $18k. That is called 50% depreciation in less than a year, once taxes and reg are figured. It doesn't get any worse than that. Add in maintenence cost if you actually ride the thing more than 100 miles a month and you are talking real $$. Granted, Ducati did this to its customers with the new improved (and cheaper) 1098, but cost of ownership has always been high. Now it is just off the charts for the most recent Superbike owners. I have been following the market like a hawk since I would like to buy a 999 in '07. The deals are irresistible. Here are some examples, a "new at dealer" 999S w/ full warranty: And a 999R that did not sell, but the bids tell the real story: And also, anyone who pays $1200 for a 911 valve adjustment is a serious crackhead and needs help. ![]() |

why pity the poor fool? They're riding a Duc. That is enough. If someone wants a gsxr over a Duc, more power to them. I certainly wouldn't though.
