My first car was.....

Several thread about people getting a "first car" for their teen.

When I was a teen, I was of the opinion that kids who's parents gave them cars were all spoiled little rich kids that would never amount to much because they didn't learn the value of earning the reward. Over the years I've learned differently. But that's all besides the point of this thread.

What was YOUR first car (or truck)??

Mine was a 1972 Pontiac GTO in Springfield Green with a 350/auto. Paid $700 (it was a beater). And I wish I still had it!!

Worked as a stocker at the local grocery store to afford it + gas, insurance, etc.

First car: 64 1/2 Mustang with a 260V8 barn find, $650, needing total restoration. Ended up having to sell it after discovering motor was toast. A really stupid move, should've sleeved the cylinders. Washed dishes all summer long after 10th grade, every weekend was combing the Hartford Courant looking for old Camaro's. Found this driving around with my dad.

Second car: 73 240Z, Webers and headers, $800, needing a new rear end. What a great car after 2 months of repairs. Remember racing the school bully in his 340 Duster over and over, and every time, the cars were almost perfectly evenly matched, but at 60+ I would inch, truly inch, away from him. Such good days.

First driveable car: 1963 VW Crew Cab Pick-up: Beasley, $275. Another one I should have kept. Top land speed: 45MPH.

I think it was a 1979 Datsun 200 SX. Bought it from my sister in 1986.

In 1963 I won a 1953 Chevy Bel Air 4-dr in a local contest in September when I was 16 - second prize was a football which tells you a little bit about the value of the car. The car wouldn't start, so the store offered me $100 to walk away. I said "Hell No!", but my father said "Hell Yes" telling me he would match me dollar-for-dollar on a 'real car' the next summer. That was a 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air 2 dr hardtop with three on the column, a 265 small block V8 and a 4 bbl carb. Sold it when I went to college. Wish I still had it.

Chrysler Valiant 1963. 225 cui with a three gears manual at the wheel. Comfy couch up front. My grandmother loved it. Claimed it smelled like a real man...

Next up a Porsche 924. First year, 1976. Deep yellow. Sold it over 15 years ago - and I still see it in the neighborhood sometimes. As beautiful as ever. Wish I still had it.

I guess my real "first car" was a 1957 4 door Chevy Belair with the Blue Flame straight six. It was turquoise with a white top. I was heavy into old cars back then. My dad bought it for a couple grand when I was 15. I learned to drive with it and quickly realized it had no pickup and drove like a tank. So my dad sold it. I got a 1972 VW Bug on my 16th birthday and drove that until my Junior year in college. I think it cost my dad about $500 back in 1988. It was orange and was quickly dubbed "The Great Pumpkin". Awesome car. I wish I had never sold it.
