How do you setup IIS on an intranet?

I'm trying to setup IIS6 (Windows 2003) on a LAN (no internet access). I need to test some websites I'm developing and don't want to always upload to the live servers. Three devices on the network, as follows:

*Cisco switch, IP: 192.168.0.3
*IIS Box, IP: 192.168.0.5
*Lappy, IP: 192.168.0.6

Since I only have to know two IPs, really, I don't care about running a DNS server. IE/FF won't connect to the IIS server, giving me a DNS ERROR error message. However, I can telnet (and get in) and ping back and forth. Web is a no-go though.

On each computer, I have no default gateway specified, and no DNS server specified (because I don't have one running).

Anyone know what the heck is going on?

Edit the hosts file (c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc) on each machine (or at least the machine from where you are going to access IIS) and add the address of the IIS server and a name (any name) i.e. IIS 192.168.0.5 with a space in the middle.

Unless you need ASP just install and run WAMP on the dev box.

When I telnet to port 80 and type "GET" and mash the enter key a few times IIS shoots me an error. Also, telnet and ftp worked, and it responded to ping requests. Which is why I'm pretty confused that when using a web browser it gives me a DNS error.

I was going to just edit the hosts file, but honestly I just don't understand why it won't work when I put http://192.168.0.5 into my browser. Under IIS Managment I set IIS to use 192.168.0.5, so that should be ok.

I dunno...I've done this about 10 times before and I don't remember having any of these problems.

Is Lappy a Laptop? I run the whole Apache, SQL, PHP setup on the same box as I develop on. That way if you are using a laptop you can work wherever you are. I know I have time to kill at the dentist tomorrow. I can work sitting it the waiting room and don't need to worry about a net connection.

Yea, I'm developing on a laptop. Like you suggested I was going to just run it all on here, but honestly, I wouldn't be able to stand it. These damn things are slow as molasses. I grew up with dual processors and fast SCSI drives, so working with this thing is driving me insane. So, I was hoping to put some of the burden on another box, since I have plenty of spares.
