Definition of euphemism: the substitution of an agreeable or inoffensive expression for one that may offend or suggest something unpleasant.

Take it or leave it.

Note: I'm not grouchy, I'm blunt. Tell it like it is.

Sorry, Zeke. The word I should have used was idiom (or idiomatic phrase), and not euphemism. Mea culpa.

I located this box in the Shed under some other boxes and it says Porsche on it.

Lo and behold, 911 Intake Valves. I have had these for some time.
I think I have Springs and Retainers also.
I will need to source some Exhaust Valves as they were likely burned.

Update Continued

I wanted to check to see how these Intake Valves would fit in these heavily Ported Cylinder Heads.
At the same time it's important to check the Valve to Bushing/Guide "play" or clearance.

I checked all the Intakes on the 6 Heads and each Intake Guide was tight.
I also checked the Exhaust Guides that still looked OK and they were tight also.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1586644401.jpg

The Valves seat well and should work to specification.
While checking the Intakes I took careful notice of the condition of the burned Exhaust Guides.

It looks like one is melted and two more are cracked on the Rim of the Bushing.
So, at least three of the Exhaust Valve Guides will need replacement.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1586644633.jpg

It's also important to check to see if the Heads have been fly-cut to accommodate larger Cylinders like 2.7 or 2.8 Liters.
I plan on using either displacement, whichever works best for the application.

Excellent advice. I am considering it.
Perhaps I can find a Machine Shop that can do a good valve job and at the same time machine out a second Spark Plug Hole for each Head.
Can anyone recommend a good Porsche Machine Shop?

Competition Engineering, ask for Walt.

Thanks for the tip on Competition Engineering.
I spoke to Walt today and had a good conversation.
I remembered the name because they used to be in Altadena, now at Late Isabella.

Walt is very knowledgeable and his Shop seems like a Hi-quality Shop.
Many years ago I used to go to Conemac in the Valley, Walt knew about them.

I thought it would be a good idea to list his prices because they are reasonable/fair.
Drill and Tap for Twin Plug for 911 air-cooled Cylinder Heads is $750 per set
Complete Valve Job for all Cylinder Heads is $725 per set
Valve Guide replacement is only $21 each installed.

He also has New Intervalve Sodium Filled Exhaust Valves for $246 per set.
Walt recommended Marine Crankshaft in Long Beach to re-grind the Crankshaft.
They can do Magnaflux Testing, Heat-treating the Bearing Surfaces, and more.

I may look for a place a little closer however.
Dave B. at TRE recommended a Shop closer that I will need to check out.

^^^ I have known Walt 40 years from when he built 2 motors for me at Redline in Santa Monica. I used to hang there at lunch and watch him couple times a week. Surgical.

I was driving up La Cienega one time in the new motor (1971 911) and a guy on a motorcycle stopped to ask me where the motor was built, he had never heard a Porsche so smooth sounding.

Just read this entire thread ..thanks to working from home. Great thread and good times.

still hunting for a 911

Well, the mystique of Mulholland found its way into the lyrics of one of Kenny Chesney's songs. Porsche content, too. As well as the beautiful and enchanting Grace Potter. :)

For those of you familiar with Mulholland, you may have noticed that for the last couple of years someone has been doing Doughnuts, lots of Doughnuts at Benedict and Mulholland.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1585781683.jpg

Perhaps it's a coincidence but in the youtube video that we made about Mulholland Racing I talk about doing Doughnuts in that exact location in the 70's and 80's.
I'm glad someone is having fun laying down Rubber in the same spot.
Inspiration comes in many forms.

Hey Chris,
nice to know you don't condemn donuts :-)

I've been following your story since i first heard of it, I encountered mulhollandraceway.org back in 2007-2008 and I've noticed it has since been restricted.
I first got into canyon driving back then, and have been since.

I am wondering if you have/had any affiliation to that page.

I met Gary on Mulholland back in 2016/2017, when my local road was shut down due to a fire we spent many nights on mulholland with the now locals (lots of young kids from well to do families)

I enjoy driving mulholland, it's tough as a full course run because of all the drive ways, blind corners and traffic. I enjoy the road though, it's an amazing course.

Most of the canyon runners now a days stick to malibu or angeles forest roads, there's one very close by in the SFV, little tujunga, would you be able to come drive with us some day... or night...

I hope to one day tune a vehicle for that road specifically.

I've also been working on a script for a movie about mountain racing in LA, something modern, and much more realistic than fast and the furious. I really enjoyed King of the Mountain.

If anyone is willing, I would like to make a short film collecting anecdotes and experiences of your years driving mulholland and or racing mountain roads in Los Angeles.

by the way, I made a mock touge news special, what do you think?

Add another to the "I just read the whole thread" list.

Thanks to everyone who contributed. And, thank you Chris for the adventure this thread has taken me on.

Finished the thread. Incredible history. As a 22 year old 3D artist and VFX/Film bachelor... this is prime story telling churning my mental gears. Wishing the best on the Targa build and excited to see more. Will be returning.

Work done by John Mason Engineering.

Chris, do you have any pictures of the rear arms? Were they modified original steel arms or were you able to use the real RSR arms that were remounted like the turbo arms?

They were Original Steel Trailing Arms that were Gusseted per RSR Specs by John Mason in 1975. No pics at the moment but will take some when I remove the Engine to replace the Rear Mail Seal.

Mulholland Paving

btw, Mulholland has recently been repaved in certain areas.
Here is a shot of the S'ss showing how smooth and perfect the Asphalt looks.
No Bumps, no Potholes, and No Double Yellow(yet).
Very nice driving now.

The MulhollandRaceway.org site is for a very Private and Secretive Group that want to remain under the Radar for good reasons, I cannot discuss this here.

It's nice that you met Gary, he is the most permanent fixture on Mulholland Drive for many Decades. He has many good stories to tell.

Due to the many new houses, a greater influx of Traffic, and Crazy people driving on Mulholland it has become a less favorable place to go driving fast. Hence, as you said Mulholland Hwy, and Angeles Crest is being used more frequently. In any case it's important to drive safely and not endanger other's lives. Too many people on the road makes this difficult, so please be careful.

Nice short of News Special btw, has possibilities.

Mulholland and Benedict

I noticed yesterday that yellow Pylons have been installed at Mulholland and Benedict Canyon.
This surely has been done to discourage Cars from doing Doughnuts there.

I have been hearing Cars for the last 3 months laying down Rubber at that location.
I can hear it from my Bedroom Window, usually at around 12:30 to 1:30am, and lasting for about 2 to 3 minutes.

btw, there are Cameras at most Intersections on Mulholland that are discreet and not well seen.
