Jeremy- the shot was taken on Bowmont, about 100 yards east of Grandstands. Cory wanted the pic to show the hillsides. And with grandstands being all dirt with a mound blocking the view, our usual hangout was the chosen spot for the group pic

HPV- yep- that was Craig's Capri in the pic that eventually passed thru you, and then to my ex girlfriend. The Recaro Porsche sport seat ended up in my second red mini - still around with one of our friends

That was a real Challenger T/A in bright orange with white vinyl top. He put some Konis on it, lowered it a little, Widened stock steel rims- it was bad-a$$. He sold it a little while later for around $3500 so he could finish school

Slider79SC 01-22-2007 09:32 AM

Honestly thinking about doing a Challenger or Cuda with some wide 17's good suspension and a viper motor or aluminum big block with a 6 spd in it.....

I love the old Mopars...

Expensive but very tasty ! I presume you've seen the red Charger that was set up this way?

Slider79SC 01-22-2007 11:16 AM

I think I have seen a few pics of it, wasn't it in Hot Rod or Car Craft recently.....

Can't be more expensive than this Porsche thing I have become addicted to......http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat6.gif

how true!

VZ935 01-22-2007 11:49 AM

I have done it but with my 69 RS Z ... 427 SB pump gas motor makes over 500 ft lbs of TQ and almost 600 HP . TKO 600 , 4 wheel discs , 17" American Racing TT II's has koni's but am just now installing all the DSE suspension and will drop the car a few inches . Very fun to drive plus people love the car.. old school styling that most everyone likes. I would love to do a 70 Cuda too. In my opinion the 69 Camaro and 70 Cuda are two of the best looking muscle cars ever built.

The Under Grand Prix Muholland Drive groupe some how came to meet and became life long friends. I was living in Granada Hills reading Road
& Track to this day its the best road racing magazine on this planet.
As a 13 year old kid Who loved Road Racing F1 Lemans etc.

I read that Carrol Shelby,Phil Hill, Ricthie Ginther,
Bob Bondurant,Parnelli Jones all cut their teeth on Muholland Drive.
So I had to get there,
Thats when all of us met we were all same age, we bonded,
like the Monterey Pop Festival 1966 I was there
just as significant. I worked as a corner flag man at Riverside Raceway,
Laguna Seca and enjoyed the Can Am Mc alaren domince get trounced by Mark Donahue/Roger Penske Porsche made history Period !

The picture of the masked youths on Muholland I recognize all the usual suspects. When we were up on Muhollannd we met race legends like Dan Gurney,Pete Brock,Parneli, and so many more...

Its seems time has come for a book to compile the tall true tales
that conspired. I'm certain it will be a special part of Road Racing History.

Henry made his mark with a light yellow 510 that he "BRE"-ed out . Later he got a avocado green 510 that got a LOT of SSS tricks- that car was a real beauty! He sold it and made money on it - this in the time when you were lucky to get 50 cents on the dollar with modified cars.

During the beginning of the gas crisis, some guy came up to the Hill with his recently aquired Boss 429 that he bought for $2500 !

lfot 01-24-2007 12:17 PM

Wow!
Check out this Pelican thread started by Chris Banning in 2005 about writing the book.

Dave,
You tell even more great stories in here!

Some cool pics as well. A better pic of Banning's Porsche and a couple of his SCCA prep Camaro.

510s are SOOOOOOOOO cool.

Dave, did Crazy Ed from Ed's Place have anything to do with those 510s?

SSB 01-24-2007 07:11 PM

Victor's Getting Old

Well, your right, that was Tommy in the Lady's garage. Funny I don't remember that episode as apparently the Blue bug was after his '64 Chrysler New Port Mulholland car (with the rectangular steering wheel) which I did ride in (I was the only one who would, I guess). Anyway, the rest of the story is that while one cop was arresting Tommy, another was arresting some other hapless fellow who happen to be unlucky enough to be also driving a blue bug across mulholland (actually in Franklin Canyon). Once deposited in jail, Tommy was confronted by a very angry dude about being arrested falsely. Tommy offered his sympathy but never admitted anything.

ps I have the entire Hot Rod article in adobe but can't up-load that. How does one change an adobe to jped?

hpv 01-24-2007 10:11 PM

Dave ,
Thanks for the 510 compliment,I had a great time with those cars, It was
a great era having access to Pet Brock,John Morton,Trevor Harris,Mac Tilton these were all Carrol Shelbys Lemans crew making magic with 510s & 240 Z's . I did the same BRE Magic with a 1970 240Z .Mac Tilton
designed a Harmonic balancer for $100.00 The prices to build a great
510 was $3000.00. Todays costs are so crazy. But in retrospet $3000.00
was more than a 510 sold for, New $2700.00 MSRP
So in todays dollars 350Z 45k Hot Rod it $45k sounds normal its just alot more zeros. Miss the old days ! HPV

hpv 01-24-2007 10:35 PM

Marco,
Are you 914/6 guy that had the misfortunate head on collision with Pat Pearson ? Apart from the yellow and green 510s I had a black 240 Z
A black 69 Lotus Elan S4 Slate Grey 73 Capri and they all have the distinction of NOT going over Muholland. I can say I was riding with John Norris in his Yellow 73 Carpri just behind Unlucky Pat Pearson's Boss 302
enroute to a concert to Hollywood bowl gets 2nd head on collision just about Carls turn. 914/6 was on wrong side of road,914 much lighter at impact flipped overand down 300' canyon. By time police Tow truck etc arrived 20 minutes had passed, We all assumed 914 driver/passenger
had perished,we hear Jesus Christ,Holy Hell from the bushes and turns out 914 driver/passenger car landed in tree top they were thrown out
and climbed 300 ft back to ground zero. Unbelievable they survived Pat got a broken nose, Boss 302 back to body shop.20 years later I ;m at willow Springs POC TT sat night party and I'm telling this story, and the 914 driver says yes that exactly how that accident happened I was the driver ! I forgot his name but remember he was still racing a 914/6.
I'd bet Dave B TRE Cup remembers he was standing next to me.

Other funny Willow story same weekend I was one of event masters being in restaurant business,I arranged for Mohave Brewing to donate
30 cases of Lowenbrau Bier Free. Dave called and explained his guy wasn't able to pick up bier on fri and deadline was 3:00 fri so I left my restauraunt 1pm thousand oaks tok the 101 to 126 to 5 and to 14 to Mohave 30 miles past Willow Springs with my 1972 911S Gulf Orange
3.0 Andial twin plug I arrived in 1 hour driving very much in a hurry
I managed to sqeezed 27 cases of Lowenbrau into 911, I have a picture
the owner of Mohave distrubuter drove a Corvette he could not believe
how I fit so many cases. I wasn't able to get to fifth gear.

I still have 911S 3.0 Its Grand Prix White

hpv 01-24-2007 10:53 PM

Do you remember a red '65 mustang coupe that ran with Pat Pearson, Ron Cortez and Bob Wilcox (aka Bullwinkle)?

Slider79SC 01-25-2007 08:53 AM

I can scan in the rest of the cars from this article if you want, there are some pretty interseting rides in there.

TRE Cup 01-25-2007 09:16 AM

I can honestly say that I never saw that porschev monster up on mulholland.
The red mustang coupe was a beat up K code hi-po that Keith Jones resurrected from the dead for $500. He really threw that car around.

To lend some Porsche content to this thread:
A Porsche independant shop owner in the south bay imported a pair of 906's from europe. John D. actually came up to mulholland one night zipping around- too bumpy for the plastic porsche!

There was a shop on La Cienega called Group 3 Racing (where Fatburger is at San Vicente and La Cienega).
A bunch of racing gear heads that were into porsches were doing repairs and modifying them. One of the buddies (may have even been a partner) had a 911R that he drove on the street (Jeff Mannix) Well.. Jeff happened to live right off Mulholand and you know the rest- That car wailed with its rally exhaust
There were articles on it too. Saw it for sale at Bob Smith Porsche for $8k OBO asking price (yah- i know- i pestered my parents incessantly for two weeks till i found the car sold for around 6k to someone else)
Another car that made a few "test laps" was a 911 that Gp 3 built for imsa 2.5 class. They took a 911S, welded on and modified 4) super beetle fenders for flares (they looked pretty good too!). They built the snot out of the motor and suspension. It remained "street legal" for a while and it made some hellacious passes thru .
But the driver never stopped- car was dark blue with straight pipes. As you can imagine the ever so glorious 7500 rpm wail bouncing off the mountain's cliffs most certainly woke up the neighborhood!

Yeah -about that Elan- no one wanted to catch you since its electricals were always catching fire !!! (hee hee hee- Lucas - Prince of Darkness struck again!)

Jeremy Cottrell 01-25-2007 11:17 AM

Henry, I know what you drive now. I have driven them :) Did you know my brother back then? He ran a couple 510s too.

You can do it page by page using the latest Adobe Reader 8 (download it here). You open the PDF file in the new reader and go to the first page you want to convert and select Edit-->Copy File to Clipboard from the menu bar. Then open your imaging program and Edit-->Paste the page into a new image file and save it as a jpeg. Repeat for each page you want to convert, saving each one with a different file name.

Or you could upload the PDF file to a free web-hosting site and just post a link to it here. Or send it to me by email and I'll do it for you, if these directions are too obscure or unclear.

This is a great thread, I'd be willing to convert and post the article to keep it expanding and growing.

Unfortunately I can't say. I've seen the movie and thought it was great, but I was also about 11 years old. I'd like to see it again. I'd be bummed if it wasn't any good.

I hope that "Gumball Rally" goes to DVD someday.

BTW, this and the other thread about the writing of the Banning book are great. I was born too late and on the wrong side of the states.

SSB, TRE CUP

Yes, that Red Mustang was me!

SSB - I don't recall you...what did you drive?

TRE CUP - Dave, I thought remembered you from the early days when we met at the RGruppe meets, but I couldn't place when or where. After seeing the photo of your Tempest it all came back and I couldn't resist jumping in this thread. I remember seeing that big stock car of yours rumbling through the canyons, it always reminded me of NASCAR at Riverside...looked *****en.

Those were great days mixing it up with everything from little fiats sedans to Charlie's Vet. We used to call him crazy Charlie, not only because of his wild driving, but also because of some of the stunts he pulled. Were you there the night he pulled out a revolver, shot out the streetlight and sped off? Amazing we survived.

Keith

TRE Cup 01-25-2007 05:00 PM

Hey Keith- Often wondered where you ended up!!
This is getting "what a small world we live in", isn't it? Remember big Steve- he is in the hospital with some infection- you can contact me at the shop (818 509-0257) for his info- I think he would get a blast hearing from you

Charlie> oh yeah; you bet i remember. I had my back turned to him chatting with some one when he had stumbled up, pulled his .38 and blasted the light to its demise. He slurringly yelled out "Damn it- I finally got you $#%&* sucker !!" It bugged him whenever he was driving thru at night, i guess.

I don't know if i was the one responsible for turning him onto Dick Guldstrand. My dad had a Citroen SM at the time, and the only service center was off of Jefferson near Traco and Dick's place. Dick was nice enough to allow me to check out the cars (various race Corvettes, a Cheetah, a replica Mc Claren coupe with aluminum headed small block)
When Charlie started trusting us and parked to chat, I told him all about the Gran Sport vettes that GM had done. We walked around his car and i detailed out the trick stuff those cars had and told him about Guldstrand's. Shortly thereafter his Vette started getting meaner and meaner. We used to take my dad's machine shop cars to Charlie's gas station for repairs too

SSB is Victor and remember the super clean MGB on chrome wires? That was him. He got the Peugeot to race later one
