Porsche Crest My sweet sixteen

What in God's name are these people thinking?!!!

Am I that out of touch or do you guys think the parties these brats have are totally stupid?

I want to see where these monsters are in 5 years.

The parents have to be nuts to think that this is good for the girls.

Our daughter went to a black-tie sweet sixteen party a couple of weeks ago. The party was for two girls, sisters (blended family) who were turning 16 within a few days of eachother. The family rented a ballroom at a hotel and hired a very decent live band. Expensive buffet and TWO brand new cars.

On the way home, Shelby is describing this to me and explaining that she can't wait until she turns 16. I said "Kiddo, if you're lucky you'll get pizza at Angelo's and a moped!"

My wifes manages a banquet hall part time, she tells me some of the prices parents spend on sweet sixteens. $20-40,000 is not unheard of. Some are as extravagant as most weddings.
It is ridiculous. Even worse are Bar and Bat mitsvas

When I was 15 my brother told me that if I could get the car in the back of his yard running I could have it. Went and bought a new battery ($5 or so) and a few gallons of gas and after a few hours work it was driving.

Turned 16 a few weeks later and had a car. It was a 1950 Mercury two door hardtop and I was in heaven.

These kids need to get back in touch with reality and the parents with them. The way they are being spoiled is doing no one any good.

Joe

PS Wish I had the car back today!

My stepdaughter watchs that show. She really thinks it is real life. I have tried to tell her that is a small % of the population that can do that. I have also told her that I did not get a liscence till I was 18 had a car that was in my name and insurance. She looks at me like I am crazy. Oh wait she will find out.

At 16 I was happy just borrowing Moms Datsun wagon from time to time.

+1.

A party or small get-together I could understand. A big extravagent thing with a bunch of hoopla surrounding it like a debutante ball is ridiculous, IMO. Cripes, I think we spent maybe $5,000 on our WEDDING! (it was pretty nice too - we just cut out a lot of the fluffy B.S. and kept it simple and clean and nice). $20k on a kid's birthday? Must be nice to be a billionaire I guess. Even if I were, I don't think I'd spend that much. Ridiculous.

I was watching this with my 13yo daughter. She has the right perspective, it's over the top entertainment - though there are some folks out there with seriously messed up priorities.

I said to her, "I love you so much I would never do that for you."

She smiled and said, "I understand."

I have de-selected MTV on my satellite receiver.

Sad I remember living in my brothers garage (my first apartment... $200 a month!) he had climbed the telephone poll and spliced into the cable (don't try this at home!). One day this new channel comes on... MTV.... they played nothing but music videos and didn't even have commercials for the first month or so.

When I graduated from high school I got $600 toward my first car but dad had to approve the car.

If I ever have kids, they will get the same treatment I got. That is: Remind them at 14 that they will be driving in a couple years. Next, tell them if they want a car, they will need to get a part-time job to save $$ for it. Then, when they turn 16 I will match whatever amount they saved and put it towards their new (used) car.

Yea, remember when "Music Television" actually had something to do with music?

They've sucked since "Beevis & Butthead". Actually they pretty much sucked before then too, going all the way back to about 1987 or so.

Hello! Since I tend to keep cars a long time, my 14 year old daughter knows she will be driving our 2000 Trooper when she gets her permit. She has no problems with it.

My 12 year old son gets my 1999 Tacoma...he can't wait.

Both are/will be in excellent repair.

It is their call...they can also walk.

the worst part about these supersweetsixteen witches
is when they are "handing out" invitations
they are openly talking trash about how that kid or that kid can't come because he's a looser and like what was he thinking , i'm like so cool and he's like so not, no waaaaay can he come to my 16...

if i had kids like that, i'de throw a sweet 16 party for some other less fortunate kids, and ground my own kid till he or she is like eeem 18 or sometin. and then they can like get a job and work for a car or sometin...

I'm with you 100% on this. I think it is pure evil. The worst of LA & NY life piped right into the living room of (previously) innocent middle America. Doesn't get any worse than that. Some people say American lost its innocence on 9/11/01. I would argue that it lost its innocence when MTV deified tattoos and gang banging rappers.
