buying a CPO Boxster>pros vs cons

lookingat buying a porsche Certified pre owned boxster. the car is a basic 02 boxster, black,5 speed, 16" wheels and a grey interior/top. 34k miles $23000. is this a good deal on a boxster? car is a 1 owner lease return, and is stunning....i want to get a cpo car because i want a solid warranty(porsche cpo is 2/100k miles bumper to bumper) I was gonna buy a cpo TT 225 quattro for not much less, but it had a better interest rate (5.9 program vs 8.5 bank rate) the porsche will work out to 75-80 more monthly. figured the value of the boxster will stay high compared to the tt in 5 years..agree? I think that it will be a better value then

Wow I just can't believe how much Boxsters depreciate. That sure seems like one hell of a deal to me!

Sound like a great deal. The earlier Boxter S is a great bargain in my opinion, most likely due to the Caymen. Frankly, I surprised that Porsche would put a warranty on a 5 year old car. I would not count on the Boxster holding on much value, and comparing it to the Audi is a poor comparison since Audi's vlaues drop like stones. I'd read the fine print of the contract and make sure it covers everything in question and then move on it. A fellow Porsche owner bought the same year, model with the same amount of mile for $25k, so your in line. I'm not sure his came with a warranty either. Thats got to be worth $1k or more. Good luck. Comes with a hardtop?

I have used these people and they are great - send you a blank check next day. Show where you want - used car rates pretty good. 6.85% 60 months

You might also want to look into an '03, I believe that's the first year the Boxster had a glass rear window. Having had the plastic version I know I'd pay a little more for that. It also got a minor cosmetic refresh (bumpers and clear taillights I think) that year.

Boxsters have among the worst depreciation rates of any car out there. That's one reason I ended up with my Mercedes instead of the Boxster I actually went in to buy. It was a key component of the decision. With the Mercedes, the rate of my payments just about keeps pace with the depreciation, which is flattening out. With the Boxster, it was still dropping pretty sharply and it would have been extremely difficult to avoid going "upside down" on the loan for the car. Obviously not an issue if you have a huge down payment or are paying cash, but that wasn't my situation.

Anyway, I did actually look at a CPO Boxster "S" a while back - it was EXTREMELY expensive for what it was. The car was 3 years old, average mileage (IIRC it was like 35k or something) and in good shape. The dealership wanted $40k. I was like, "are you *****ting me?". KBB on it was about $10k less than that. I guess the dealerships are used to people paying out the nose for the "Porsche" name and they milk the hell out of it - even on the CPO stuff. I said no thanks, I'll keep my 3 944s for now, thanks.

yes..i checked that deprciation too, the car as it stands is about 3000 under current kbb in my area. I just spoke with my insurance agent, the boxster is 400 a year cheaper to insure than the TT...go figure. While I feel that it is a premium, for the CPO, it is worth it for the warranty

01/02 225hp quattro coupe or roadster, it seemd that the roadster out numbered the coupe like 50-1 and most all were silver...all the CPO TT's were ranging from $20-25k

I have a 01 TTC 225 hp with 39K miles. I paid $17K for it a year ago with 32K miles. Color is Lake silver with dark gray leather and is pretty much loaded with options. The known issues for these cars are dash pod failures and timing belts. Recommended that the belt gets changed before 60K miles - that's roughly a $1K job I believe. My TT is stock except for a GIAC chip and has thus far been rock solid. Get's 30 mpg on freeway, will probably do better on a trip, and is a great DD.

I like the fact that I don't see many on the road - well not nearly as many as the Boxter. I'm sure the Boxter will out handle a stock TT but with the chip the TT can hold it's own in normal day to day encounters. The car is heavy but the interior is really well done in design and materials. Makes the boxter look cheap in comparison.

As mentioned resale is horrible on both cars. You may want to consider a low mile PP car and buy the extended warranty after the fact. Sounds like you'll save money in the long run.

I'd add that personally I prefer the coupe to the roadster in that it's tons quieter and you still have back seats (admittedly for kids < 10 or a couple of dwarfs). The coupe also looks better than the roadster with it's soft top up. Drive them both before making any decisions.

s2000's are big $ here, more than a boxster or a TT. The TT is so common at Audi dealers here it is amazing, all are lease cars(same with the boxster) but they are almost all roadsters. the audi did feel heavy to me, the motor was lazy compared to my 06 gti mk5 i am replacing, the boxster revved very fluidly compared to the tt
