almost got me...

I recently sold some parts, and have a chunk of cash in my paypal account that I was going to withdraw this week.

About an hour ago, I got an email that my paypal account was being "limited" until I provide more billing info.

"Crap!", thinks me, " I had better get cracking!

Then I notice that I had to provide the info by April 19th! Crap crap!

HAy... wait a second....

Click on the link in the email and it goes to:

Obviously a scam. I've received similar "notices", despite never having opened a paypal account. I've seen a few posts here slamming paypal itself as well...

Good catch!
(I think) the secure sites start with "https" and have the yellow lock in the browser corner.

Ya, it's scary that I coulda been duped. I was multitasking on a conference call, and just about to go for lunch... had been thinking about withdrawing today anyway so...

Glad I had a rare flash of common sense. That was my quota for the month

look folks. this is easy. your information is NEVER out of date unless YOU decide that it is. any company or bank, with which you are doing business, will take it on faith that your information is "current" until you decide to inform them that you have moved, changed your phone number, updated your shoe size, or any other information that may be necessary. if, for any reason, the bank (or paypal) should need anything from you, they have more secure ways of contacting you

Agreed, but with paypal all the communication is through email, so this didn't stand out.

What did stand out was their request to login through an embedded link in the body of the email message.

Send it to spoof@paypal.com

I get several from PP and Ebay almost every day.

Lube,

Overseas they have done this already. You want a coke, wave your cell phone near the machine, press a couple of buttons, and it debits your account. Same thing at Burger King/McDonalds and so on, just wave your cell phone near the terminal, press a series of buttons and its paid for.

When (not if) I win the lottery, I am going to send emails as a Nigerian Prince, saying that I have $250 000 that I need to transfer into a North American account. First 4 people that give me their complete banking info, I'll actually give them the money. That'll totally screw people up

All it would take is for someone to "clone" your SIM chip and run your phone account out.

Its been done before...

I actually had my Fleabay account suspended because they choose to only communicate via email.

I owed them couple of bucks for listing fees and simply forgot about it.

I became aware of it when I got a collections notice.

I was pretty pissed.

They are well aware of the high volume of account phising that goes on and the fact that they expect anyone to pay attention to their emails is ridiculous.

At the time this happened I was getting 2-3 ebay phising emails per week.
