Crashed my 993:(
So, Unfortunately I destroyed my beloved car. Total loss. It was a beautiful car that lasted me a whole year. Almost to the day.
I was driving in the rain on summer tires which I don't recommend, but wasn't really thinking about it. The car hydroplaned in the Broadway tunnel heading toward Pac Heights for those that know the area. From the damage you could see the shape of a big concrete pillar that stopped me at about 50mph. I wasn't hurt except for a bruise the size of a toaster on my right hip. It was caused by the seatbelt. Both airbags deployed on myself and a friend (he's fine) riding shotgun, Although they didn't really help much due to the side impact. It was good though to see firsthand how they work! My insurance said the car would be more than 35,000 to fix, somewhere between 37,000 and 40,000, therefore a TL. I do have a question for all of you. What do you think my first offer will be from AAA? I purchased for 55,000 at 34K miles. The car now has 46,054 miles. 1998 911 Carrera S. RIP. My mechanic may be doing the buy back. In the process of finding a 993 turbo, low miles, either a '97 or '98. ![]() ![]() BEFORE: ![]()

Man, I'm glad you're OK. Sucks about the ride but it's only a car. Post a pic of the replacement when you get it.

Sorry about your loss. Glad you are alright. From my having wrecked a car experience. The insurance companies usually take 3 market values for cars for sale in your area. I would say based on cars for sale in your area, you are bound to get about 47k to start and then add tax, registration fees paid and any additional negotiated options, you can probably get $50k back from the insurance company.

Thanks everyone. I did get a first offer from AAA, and yes they do take 3 market values, by an independent claim service, this one called CCC Valuescope. So, any other guesses on the first offer?
I just go the first offer today. Anyone?

Tough Loss. Great looking Car. Im curious how it hydroplaned so easily. I had a similar situation with my 993, but I changed the tires out to Yokos and it seems to have settled it down. glad you are ok

Sorry to hear of your accident. Looks like a really nice car. Glad you were not injured any more (same for your friend) but cars can be replaced and the human body can't.
Cheers

Ok...since response has been pretty sparse I'll just blurt it out.
first offer: 54,791.42 Not bad! So, I bought the car for 55K, put 2.5K into new power steering, and, that's about it. It cost me about 5K in taxes, so that's a total of 62.5K. I think it looks pretty good. But, I took a look at they cars they compared mine to and here is the break down. 1. 1998 Carrera S / auto trans / fully loaded/ 46,xxx Miles = 48K 2. 1999 Carrera S / no air, no airbag,no cruise, no keyless, no leather, no power windows etc. / 46.5K 3. 1999 Carrera S / 26,xxx Miles / Also no extras / 46.5K Now, I don't know how they came up with a number higher than those, but I do feel they should compare only '98 carrera S 6speeds because as we all know, for one, the 993 is different than a 996, and the 993 they compared was a automatic. So should I have them re-do with only 993's? I just feel this was a first offer and I am still losing out on at least 5K because of tax.

I am glad to hear that you are ok.
Being a gear head I have to ask... If the insurance company offers you a buy back for the car if you are not interested how about passing the opportunity to another bay area porsche nut ![]() I suspect the insurance company will offer you ~45Kish +- (looked at Kelley Blue Book) with some kind of buy back option on the car. Since I would really like the engine, trans, and brakes off that car I might be able to make your accident not such a bad deal. Seriously, if you want to make some sort of deal on the remains let me know. I now feel like some sort of ambulence chasing attourney ... but I am just a low life engineer who would really like the remains if you dont. Hope to hear from you... Larry Ratcliff PS: shoot me an email at larryratcliff@hotmail.com if you want to make some sort of deal I live in Moraga. Last edited by Larry_Ratcliff; 01-11-2007 at 07:53 PM.. |

The $55k you paid was a year ago at 34k miles. The car has now 12k miles more and is a year older. That warrants $5k in depreciation, don't you think? And repairs or minor upgrades never count towards the value of the car. That insurance offer is very good. Not sure if you will get a whole lot more. I'd take it and move on.

I know this is a good deal. I am really surprised that they offered that high to begin with. But I do think I can get more. Which is what I plan to do.
I need it for my upgrade! thanks people. K.
