English speaking kids cant ride the bus.

What a load, damn this town is weird.

ST PAUL, Minn. -- A St. Paul woman is angry because her children were told they couldn't continue riding a school bus because they speak English.

Rachel Armstrong had to leave work early to pick up her 10-year-old twin daughters and eight-year-old son at Phalen Lake Elementary School.

She said the bus driver told the children they couldn't ride the bus anymore because the route was designated for non-English speakers attending a special language academy in the district. The district began enforcing the rule Monday but didn't tell the Armstrong family.

School administrators apologized but didn't agree to let Armstrong's children continue riding the bus.

It also turns out that when the family moved last year, they landed outside of Phalen's attendance area. So if they want to continue attending Phalen Lake Elementary, they'll have to find their own ride.

I learned more 'english' riding the bus, and watching TV, sitting in 'welcome to america' class was a bore.

Try japanese: "Summi-ma-sen. Eggo-no hanasimas-sen".
Or french: "Pardone moi. Je ne comprondre pas l'angle"

If they are going to provide translators for foreign languages, then they should do it for all of them.

Wanna buy a pizza? Bring your pesos!!

Pizza Patrón lets customers use pesos to buy pie

Jan. 10, 2007 12:00 AM

Pizza Patrón, a Texas-based chain with eight locations in the Valley, says its two-month Pizza for Pesos program will allow customers to purchase pizza with Mexican currency.

Pizza Patrón spokesman Norberto Flores said the promotion was really more about profits than politics, but it has spurred more talk than action so far.

A manager at the Mesa location said no customers had come to the store with pesos as of Tuesday afternoon, but talk-radio airwaves and Internet chatrooms were burning up with discussion of the peso pies.

Refresh my memory...is ANY foreign currency considered legal tender in the US?

What gives this school the right to provide a service to one sect of children and deny the same service to another based on what language they speak?

What would happen if this had been to the tune of "this bus is only for English speaking children"

I really wonder.

Apparently the bus in question goes to a different school on a different route. It is not a "hispanics only" or whatever bus.. Kind of like a Yale singing group being beaten up in San Francisco for singing "God Bless America". It happened, but the song was not the issue. The media stinks and there is not much going on. So they play this fluff. Turn off the noise..

Hmm the way I read it is that the bus goes to Phalen Lake Elementary School. As I understand it, this is a public school.

The school could legally, and legitimitely, be biased on ridership based upon what school the children attend.

But then again, when it comes from government money used for an academy created soely for an exclusive group......there's that "seperate but equal" thing that keeps tickling the back of the brain.

From AP: "St. Paul schools spokeswoman Dayna Kennedy acknowledged Thursday that school officials handled the situation poorly, but said language had nothing to do with the incident. The reason Armstrong's children were ineligible to ride the bus was that they lived outside the school's attendance area, she said....

The Armstrongs said they learned that when they moved last year, they landed outside of Phalen's attendance area...."

One knuckle-head bus driver and a situation of misunderstanding becomes national news?

This is St. Paul MN we are talking about - not a bastion of political correctness. Basically an easy going place and they are probably embarassed by this whole issue.

My point is that real news - including important issues of immigration and education getted muddled and lost in such nonsence.
