Any Jim LAdd fans here in OT

The last DJ!

scottmandue 01-12-2007 03:02 PM

I liked him for a long time (says the old codger) toward the later years of my listening to him he started to talk a little too much and it got to be a "show". In the early years it was great to listen to him late at night when he would play thirty or forty five minute sets of music that had a common theme.

(is he still on... didn't he go off the air for awhile?)

Last year when I was on the central coast of CA. I listened to a radio station that had real DJ's. They were taking request and play new rock, classic rock, bluegrass, etc... it was great fun to listen to for a change.

scottmandue 01-12-2007 03:05 PM

Uh... perhaps I should qualify that I listened to him on this thing we called FM radio... and we only had TWO speakers... times were rough!

and there were buffalo everywhere

sammyg2 01-12-2007 04:30 PM

Nope, no fan here.
He's a hold over from the bleeding heart unrealistic hippies from the 60's.

chapo 01-12-2007 05:04 PM

i like him musically, even if his politics are a little left for me. We have a recording of my girlfriend requesting a Cream song from him last year, she's his "long legged pony" from O.C. Funny moment for us.

daepp 01-12-2007 06:45 PM

His politics are rediculously left - I subscribe tot he shut up and sing/play the damn record already camp.

But his sets are awesome!

nostatic 01-12-2007 06:47 PM

he chooses some cool music sometimes, but he thinks he is deeper than he is with his sets and mixes. kind of a deluded throwback, but i appreciate that he isn't programmed by clearchannel.

onlycafe 01-12-2007 06:49 PM

i like alan ladd.

slodave 01-12-2007 07:16 PM

I can't stand him, but, I seem to listen to him almost every night...

Yep! I remember him from the early 80's when I was stationed in SoCal. He DJ'ed on KMET while they were still on the air. I think he moved to KLSX (97.1) after that, IIRC.

He's a bit full of himself, but I used to listen to him on his show 'Headsets' which was a headphone wearing oriented show

DON'T SAY THAT!
NOW YOU HAVE DONE IT, YOU MADE THEM ANGRY! HE DIDN'T MEAN IT!

sammyg2 01-13-2007 03:45 PM

LOL, I was waiting for someone to mention the mighty met. I didn't know anyone who didn't have a KMET sticker on their car or bike or pee-chee folder.
those were the days.

Hi-Res MET!

I am repeatedly introduced to new music on his show that I eventually buy. Either newly created music or just new to me - and I'm 43.

That said, there's not a lot of room for new music what with all the Doors. A very overrated band IMO.

nostatic 01-13-2007 06:15 PM

if you listen to KROQ, you'll hear the "new" music that Ladd plays about a year or two earlier ;)

daepp 01-14-2007 04:56 PM

I get my new-new music mostly from KGSR in Austin TX - via KGSR.COM. The best AAA IMO.

Southern Cal is such a vapid wasteland of decent radio (can we all say 'enough friggin' Classic Rock') if it wasn't for KROQ, 103.1, KKJZ and "Morning Becomes Eclectic" I'd Have to pay for radio that wasn't on a loop...

speeder 01-14-2007 07:12 PM

He'll play some OK sets of music, but the guy is just insufferable to listen to, IMO. Todd pretty much nailed it, (in a nicer way than I would), he is a fatuous, pretentious lead head. Just not terribly bright or clever. Even his sets always have some lame "theme" that is way too literal, it is like a pun. (Which is the lowest form of wit).

Now Steve Jones, there's a DJ! Naturally clever beyond words in a hilarious dumb schit way, and smokin' taste in music. Plus he plays (and does) whatever the hell he wants. He is one in a million, but unfortunately and unlike Jim Ladd he is too bright and restless to stay inspired by being a radio DJ. Consequently, the burn-out has already set in.

speeder 01-14-2007 07:16 PM

And I miss Adam Corolla too, Wayne. Did you see the editorial about him in yesterday's LAT? It was great, kind of a tribute to the guy from some writer.
