good question

the 60's draft created much social tension. It wasn't a fair draft as if you were in college, had a kid, or went to the draft board stoned you'd get a deferment. It created a young society of have and have nots.

77 million baby boomers were coming online to change the world and music, the draft w/'Nam, and pop music all came together.

all imo

Metallica and Iron maiden from the 80 and 90s sung lots of songs about the military, WWII, and the cold war. So did megadeath.

Trooper, Aces High, One, Battery, Disposable heroes, For whom the bell tolls, fight fire with fire, etc.

All great, great songs with military themes and fantastic lyrics.

Toby Keith - American soldier... and Courtesy of the red white and blue.

American girls and American guys will always stand up and salute;
Will always recognize
When we see ol' glory flying,
There's a lot of men dead,
So we can sleep in peace at night when we lay down our head.

My daddy served in the army,
Where he lost his right eye.
But he flew a flag out in our yard 'til the day that he died.
He wanted my mother, my brother, my sister and me
To grow up and live happy in the land of the free.

Now this nation that I love has fallen under attack.
A mighty sucker punch came flying in from somewhere in the back.
Soon as we could see clearly through our big black eye,
Man we lit up your world like the Fourth of July.

Hey Uncle Sam put your name at the top of his list,
And the Statue of Liberty started shaking her fist.
And the eagle will fly,
And there's gonna be Hell,
When you hear Mother Freedom start ringing her bell!
It's gonna feel like the whole wide world is raining down on you...
Brought to you courtesy of the Red, White and Blue!

Oh, Justice will be served and the battle will rage.
This big dog will fight when you rattle his cage
You'll be sorry that you messed with the US of A
'Cuz we'll put a boot in your ass
It's the American way.

Hey Uncle Sam put your name at the top of his list,
And the Statue of Liberty started shaking her fist.
And the eagle will fly,
And there's gonna be Hell,
When you hear Mother Freedom start ringing her bell!
And it'll feel like the whole wide world is raining down on you...
Brought to you courtesy of the Red, White and Blue!

Of the Red, White and Blue..
Of my Red, White and Blue...

Heard the latest Pearl Jam?

They're not exactly mainstream anymore, but it is new music with plenty of references to Bush and Iraq.

John Mayer "Waiting On The World To Change"

me and all my friends
we're all misunderstood
they say we stand for nothing and
there's no way we ever could
now we see everything that's going wrong
with the world and those who lead it
we just feel like we don't have the means
to rise above and beat it

so we keep waiting
waiting on the world to change
we keep on waiting
waiting on the world to change

it's hard to beat the system
when we're standing at a distance
so we keep waiting
waiting on the world to change
now if we had the power
to bring our neighbors home from war
they would have never missed a Christmas
no more ribbons on their door
and when you trust your television
what you get is what you got
cause when they own the information, oh
they can bend it all they want

that's why we're waiting
waiting on the world to change
we keep on waiting
waiting on the world to change

it's not that we don't care,
we just know that the fight ain't fair
so we keep on waiting
waiting on the world to change

and we're still waiting
waiting on the world to change
we keep on waiting waiting on the world to change
one day our generation
is gonna rule the population
so we keep on waiting
waiting on the world to change

we keep on waiting
waiting on the world to change

John Forgerty....been down this road before:

Did you hear 'em talkin' 'bout it on the radio
Did you try to read the writing on the wall
Did that voice inside you say I've heard it all before
It's like Deja Vu all over again

Day by day I hear the voices rising
Started with a whisper like it did before
Day by day we count the dead and dying
Ship the bodies home while the networks all keep score

Did you hear 'em talkin' 'bout it on the radio
Could your eyes believe the writing on the wall
Did that voice inside you say I've heard it all before
It's like Deja Vu all over again

One by one I see the old ghosts rising
Stumblin' 'cross Big Muddy
Where the light gets dim
Day after day another Momma's crying
She's lost her precious child
To a war that has no end

Did you hear 'em talkin' 'bout it on the radio
Did you stop to read the writing at The Wall
Did that voice inside you say
I've seen this all before
It's like Deja Vu all over again
It's like Deja Vu all over again

Thanks for the links, some were good, some were, well different. I preferred "Smoke and Mirrors" and A Perfect Circle's "Pet".

I got thinking about this more last night after a bit of TV. I think comedic writers and actors are doing the bulk of the protesting against the war. Notably shows like the Daily Show, Boston Legal, etc. At least the protesting that gets to the main stream like the songs did during Vietnam. JMHO.

kach22i 01-18-2007 03:55 AM

I think the current generation may have a problem with taking anything to seriously as we are all overloaded with stress already. This is perhaps why comedy has picked up the torch of expression and protest in lieu of music.

Comedy in the 1960's early 70's forused on greater social changes. It did not touch on the war to much as no one thought war could be funny or made fun of. At least not in the same way as today. It's apple to oranges to say; but there was Hogan's Heros. Hogan's Heros anti war message did NOT exist, neither did Gomer Pyle's. Both programs disarmed and made friendly the terribleness of war. This was considered a diservice to those both pro-war and anti-war at the time yet were popular with the masses.

It is because, contrary to press accounts and sham surveys, the American people really do support the war and their military. Anyone with a "real" career in entertainment would be a fool to go against the nations military...other than the sneaky undermining that many do that is practically unattributable.

No, actually, Americans are opposed to the war crime in progress called, in the best tradition of "newsspeak", Operation Iraqi Freedom.

What you should hope for, fint, is that Americans don't decide to prosecute guys like you for your crimes. That's the risk you take when you mindlessly do what it is you do.

I am just glad to see (from this thread) that there really has been no good anti-war music made during this war. It would be a pity to waste any real talent that way.

Fint, you are right, as always. I, too, prefer the songwriting talents of luminaries such as Three Doors Down or Lee Greenwood.

That is a good one...but not as funny as the video clip you just posted. Now I see how someone earlier made the connection between current antiwar protesters and comedians. That video clip of that guy on the Leno show was funny as heck! He did an amazing job pretending that he was stupid...and keeping a straight face while pretending to really try to play the guitar...and singing that funny, satrical antiwar song that did not rhyme was hilarious. Obviously he was pretending to be Cindy Sheehan or some other equally deranged person...I think I will share this one with all my conservative friends...it is a keeper.
