US markets that are doing well?
What industries or markets are doing well anymore? Being specific as possible. I suppose emerging markets would be another interesting topic.
A guy told me recently to expect the RV industry to really go nuts as the boomers retire.

No one is buying RVs right now. Gas is too expensive. Costs $2500 to drive one of those tanks across the country. And, the funny money is gone. You can get 30-40% off of sticker on them right now.
Retirement homes? I see myself getting involved with that type of development at some point in the future. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

Are you asking about sectors or funds?

My 401k just showed a 10% increase in the last 3 months.
Guess you could say I am happy with its progress.

![]() I'm talking perhaps niche industries that you see doing well or are positioned well, etc... For instance you might say replacement windows as all the McHomes put up over the last 10 years used junk components. Stuff like that.

Gotcha, the 25000 ft view then eh?
I'm hedging on health care and anything related to the aging population. I've been in some sector specific funds for a couple years now and have done extremely well. I'm also looking (though haven't jumped in yet...) at the non-health care industries that cater to the older demographic - kinda along the lines of Motion's suggestion on the retirement community. I don't really go to the micro level tho, other than to look at a few properties in my neighborhood that have the flip potential.

Utilities and Oil & Gas.
Construction, especially roads and bridges since many were built in the 40's and 50's and are over due for replacement. Don't forget defense contractors ![]()

My best performing sector so far has been the Asian markets. I own a mutual fund that invests in about 10 asian countries including China, Vietnam, Korea, Phillipines, etc. Not Japan though.
Anyhow, it has done about 18% in the last year compared to anywhere from 3-10% for my US mutual funds. This is January 2006 to January 2007.

debt counseling, bankruptcy attorneys
why: debt loads are at record highs by all metrics Maximize your worth while minimizing your debt. Don't play the greater fool game. I like motion's retirement homes theory. Affordable single story, single family homes will once again be attractive, but I do not believe boomers will flock to warm vacation hot spots. Boomers want to be near their kids, and they can't afford to move away anyway. |

I don't know if it is doing well or not or if it is even doing - but I would invest in tattoo removal if there is a system that is priced for high volume and with results that show no trace of the former tattoo or scaring.

Another idea I've heard is hearing aides as the "rockers" are getting up there in age.

If you didn't get double digit growth last year you must have been in lottery tickets. Made up for a few of those tech disasters in the '90's.

Alternative power for transportation. Any company that perfects the hydrogen powerplant or related technology will do well in the next 20 years. Also, companies that are developing long-lasting storage batteries for electric/hybrid vehicles (and recycling of said batteries) should do well.
Now if I could only time the market to sell my gas-powered car collection just before they become obsolete or banned... Last edited by Danny_Ocean; 01-18-2007 at 09:20 PM.. |

only imo
now is a good time to find a track winner. previously most of new capital investing, over 50%, has been overseas along w/its volatility and as they continue to take the current beating investments will default to US markets. And Federal economic #'s [Treasury Jan reports] continue to exceed mass-media hype of the Dem agenda that higher taxes are necessary for a strong economy. The point is that a continuing strong economy attracts worldwide $ over the long term. Bush's fast-track authority needs renewal this June. I hope the beltway Dems are smarter than what they portray themselves as. After all we are in a worldwide economic war that ripples through our markets. Even though misinterpetion of trade and savings deficits has cramped beltway policies from both parties concerning greater US growth the US is in for a greater piece of world capital right now. More liquidity in our markets will provide buoyancy for all kinds of investments. party hearty. Vanguard "Tot St Mkt index" is a nice default over treasuries imo.
