How can this happen?

Not exactly a 911, but I suppose it could happen to a P-car, too. What keeps a shock from going in that direction? I know the large washer and bolt keep it from going down, but I've never seen this. It's my buddies car and we were going to take a look at it tomorrow. Any thoughts on the problem and or a fix?

Parts assembled in the wrong order? Missing washer under the mount? Failed mount?

Bet he needs some hood repair too.

Who jumped it? Either that or driven over washboard WAY too fast. I have seen this once before.

Check the other side and see how it is assembled in case it's missing a washer.
Stay away from speed bumps.

No Dukes of Hazard jumping, but he said he hit a huge pot hole. And yes, the hood needs some work now. Good times!

I'll check out the other side. I also stopped by an Autozone and checked out the explode view (kinda looks like the pic above. hahahaha) of the strut. The only thing I can think is the dust cap keeps it from going in that direction. It's interesting that I've never given it thought.

I don't see any damage on the shock rod so it doesn't look like it pushed through the lower washer. Looks like someone forgot the lower washer.

Looks like he hit the bump so hard that it pushed the upper retaining sheetmetal for the top of the shock out the top.

That ones going to be hard to repair correctly unless you can put a new backing plate in the wheelwell.

Why wouldn't a new strut and a new strut bearing fix all this? (and perhaps an alignment)

Nope, it's an Acura Integra.

Believe you are going to find some damage in the shock mounting tower that let the shaft go up that far. Will be interesting to see the results.

The shock is the least of your problems, the motor needs to be turned 90 degrees.

rubber insert popped through the mount. Same thing happened on an Accord I used to have.

Pretty common occurance on BMW rear shock mounts as well..
