Same here in Raleigh.
The problem is that Wake County has all the schools consolidated into one school district so if it snows in the southern part of the county, they close all the schools.

Plus the school bus drivers do not have proper training for driving in the snow and the buses do not have snow tires. I'd rather have my kids safe at home then having their bus clobbered by some SUV with 50 inch spinners sliding on the ice.

I moved out of Long Island back in 94 and don't miss it a bit.

The point is that when Michelin built their world headquarters and BMW built their North American manufacturing plant here, they didn't use the I95 corridor as the sole sample of quality of life in South Carolina.

Neither should anyone else.

So now you want to start comparing companies in NC / SC. What will it be next? I did notice Goodrich Hdq is in Charlotte. Maybe start comparing tires.

Forbes Fortune 500 by state should be good reading for you.

If you've never spent much time in the south (excluding the higher elevations), then you might want to spend a week here during the summer before you move. I'm a native, so it doesn't bother me at all, but I've seen many transplanted northerners that just can't take it....unlike AZ, it's a 'wet heat' :)!

If it's "nanny Government" you wish to eascape, moving from NY to any of the Pacific Coast states would be jumping from the frying pan into the fire.

Louisville Ky. is pretty nice. The river, some hills, and some moderate variety in the weather and a just big enough city.

Keith -
Thanks for the heads up. As the 2nd most overcast city in the US, Syracuse prepares one for "wet heat", but I need to keep just that stuff in mind.

Paul -- that's my impression of WA and OR. Moving PNW is the outlyer possibility, but I'm going to keep the options open.

5axis -- I loved Louisville when I visited. If there's a shortlist already, Louisville is on it.

OK - I say move to Florida ;)

Dave -
I know there must be places in Florida I'd like, but I haven't been to any of them.

Which is not to say I dislike every place I've been in Florida, but I wouldn't want to live in/near any of them. Where? Miami/South Beach, Orlando, Tampa, Sarasota. A lot of central FL. The Keys are great fun, for four days, and then I'm ready to kill somebody.

And, wow! You guys actually had an argument, alpha to omega, and came back on point. I don't know if I've ever seen that done before. Ever. Sweet!

I know - anytime I can take a shot at Pat I take it. Hes so much smarter than anyone else I have to pick my battles.;) . Pat no offense I am sure everyone loves you on here.

How about Jacksonville? It’s the Largest city (square miles) in the country but easy to get around. Professional football. Close to Disney. Close to the beach. My wife and I have lived in Richmond, Raleigh and here. She wont move back to Richmond she loves it that much. It does get hot as hizell here but it’s a nice wet hot and its only 2 months out of the year. Winters are awesome; I still have issues mowing my yard in shorts in January. Don’t get me wrong, it gets cold but warms right up. Just enough to make you remember the northern days. Plenty of big companies HQ here as well. No tire companies mind you but CSX, Winn Dixie, PSS World Medical - 8 fourtune 500 companies. Best of all – everyday is a 911 day!!

What day are you moving? I want to schedule a root canal for that day.
