Thanks, Pat!
My brother has been there 3 years, and my sister for a year. I've been a few times (including St. Pat's 2 years ago - at a Japanese restaurant, b/c car bombs were $5...which was a big deal when they still used the little bottles for booze) and, as long as it's between October and April, I love the place!

If I could work out snowbirding from Sept-April in SC (and have that be my state of residence) I could probably stand being in NY for the remaining 4 months.

The weather issues are why I'm in western South Carolina, elevation at my place is 1100-1200 feet. It's not too cold in the winter, low so far this winter is 20F, and not too hot with a summer high in the mid-90's. It's mostly in the high 80's all summer.

We keep California weird to keep them red-staters out of here. Unfortunately people still keep coming from other places.

adomakin 01-23-2007 07:38 AM

come to London! yeah its a bit rubbish for weather but theres hardly anyone here, property is real cheap and fuel is even cheaper.
Andy. living in a 4 bed semi detached house (with lots still to do) on a busy road with 120ftx30ft garden. current market value in your dollars-$560-600000 fuel? try $8 a gallon. diesel? even more.

There's 16 acres (6.5 hectares) for sale near me for $250,000, and that's considered very high. It has a 1.5 acre pond fed by a spring, graveled drive, electrical power already in place, but no house yet.

In a sense, you'll enjoy a culture that's not too distant from your own base, even if the state you're from is moving away from where you want to be philosophically.

Sorry Pat but I don't agree - yes Virginia is to NC but NC is nothing like SC. Anyone from NC will tell you that. NC has been trying to break away from the SC stigma for years - SC just rides NC coat tails.

Everone stop calling Virginia a state its a commonweatlh.

I was pulled over once for doing an illegal U-turn in a median (I know) and the officer asked what I was doing and after listening to me he said "Not in the Commonwealth Of Virginia you dont". I still laugh to this day.

If you have all those toys - Va will PP Tax and the heck out of you!!!

Jim Richards 01-23-2007 08:23 AM

oh yeah, ya gotta just love the annual personal property taxes in the "Commonwealth."

Super_Dave_D 01-23-2007 08:27 AM

And State Inspection Stickers and County stickers on your windshield BUT only after you paid your PP tax.

Overpaid Slacker 01-23-2007 08:28 AM

I remember the PP tax in the "Commonwealth" from my days lawyering in DC.

That's a definite strike against VA. I own too much stuff to subject myself to that.

+1000 :D

The NC Highway Usage Tax bit me in the arse when I moved back from CA. I had to register 4 vehicles.

All transactions involving a vehicle titled out of state 90 days prior to registering in North Carolina will be taxed on vehicle value, with a maximum of $150.00 being assessed. If owned less than 90 days before applying for North Carolina Title, tax credit against the highway use tax due will be allowed for the amount of tax paid to the other state upon submission of proof of payment. If the vehicle was titled in North Carolina after 90 days of purchase from a dealer, no credit would be allowed. Full highway use tax would be due on the purchase price, less any trade-in credit

Last I heard South Carolina was seceding from the Union.

No taxes, no gun laws..run wild....run free.

They were going to but the Civil War has not been decided yet. Lets wait and see what happens with that.

Overpaid Slacker 01-23-2007 09:22 AM

Bill -
Is the highway usage tax a one-time deal (ie upon initial registration or purchase, but not again) or is it annual or biannual (upon renewal of registration, eg).

JP

Super_Dave_D 01-23-2007 09:26 AM

Highway Use Tax (HUT)
North Carolina collects a 3% Highway Use Tax on vehicles in lieu of a state sales tax (General Statute 105-187.2). The tax is assessed each time a title is transferred. The maximum tax for commercial vehicles (vehicles with a weight greater than 26,000 pounds) is $1,000.00. All other vehicles are charged 3% with no ceiling.

Out-of-State Residents:
All transactions involving a vehicle titled out of state 90 days prior to registering in North Carolina will be taxed on vehicle value, with a maximum of $150.00 being assessed. If owned less than 90 days before applying for North Carolina Title, tax credit against the highway use tax due will be allowed for the amount of tax paid to the other state upon submission of proof of payment. And how closely do they look at vehicles' actual value? check out my sig block... if it's "just" a 1973 2002 (for example) it could be worth $500. If it's mine, it's probably worth $20k.

So will they just see a list of old cars and figure they're not worth a whole lot? No appraisals required, I assume.

I've lived in NYC, on Long Island and upstate and there's no escape as long as I'm in this benighted neo-socialist petri dish.
Good god do i sympathize with you brother. :(

VA did away with county decals last year. The PPT varies from county to county. It's not a state thing.

Overpaid Slacker 01-23-2007 11:19 AM

Hmmmmm.... so, Rick, some counties have no PPT? That's good to know.

JP

Rick Lee 01-23-2007 11:37 AM

I don't believe any county has zero PPT, but some are lower than others.

AS a former long-term resident of Upstate New York, why hasn't anyone made reference to the lousy Winter weather as a factor that discourages industry from establishing itself there? Energy costs, transportation that can be curtailed by blizzard or ice storm, lost workdays, etc. I would think that if I were a CEO, I would be looking at somewhat predictable weather as one factor to be considered when looking for a place to locate.
