Wow, too much of anything can kill you.

Quote:
The Sacramento County coroner said preliminary autopsy findings indicated she died of water intoxication.........................

A college student in New York died from forced consumption of water in 2003, according to records. He was forced to drink so many pitchers of water through a funnel that the sodium in his body dropped to lethal levels and his brain swelled. He died of hyponatremia, according to an autopsy.

This is why I recommend drinking only Gatorade. Of course, that may be why I know so many diabetics...

Each year a few very slow runners die from water intoxication (hyponaetremia, I think it's otherwise called) in marathons. The media picked up on it after boston this year and hyped it out of proportion.

Marathoners drink nothing but water for 5-6 hours, and a lot of it, then die from being treated for a heat injury, as the symptoms are similar.

A different news report said that she drank "a half gallon of water"...thats not very much!? This one says 2 gallons though...stupid promotion either way.

Surprising that any media outlet would sponsor such a promotion without considering the possible health risks involved.

In comes the attorney:

Quote:
Contestants signed a waiver before taking part in the competition, but the winner of the game said participants were never alerted to the dangers. A listener who said she is a nurse called the show and warned the deejays on air of the risks of the game.

Timothy O'Connor, a personal injury attorney, called the waiver "meaningless" and said the radio station still shares some responsibility.

"Waivers deal with the risk of an activity," O'Connor said. "Nobody drinks a glass of water and thinks, 'This can kill me.'"

If they stayed on the same pattern mentioned at the beginning of the article she would have consumed 2 gallons over a 3 hour period.

There was only the rule she could not Pee nothing about vomiting.

Very sad story, leaving behind a husband and 3 kids.

Yup, this happened to me long ago when I was a runner. It's a terrible feeling. When I wore black shorts in a marathon and could see the white salt stains on the fabric, I knew I should have been drinking Gatorade instead of water.

Glad you made it through--serious stuff.

FYI, since you're in VA and likely face horrible, humid summers, try a product called eload (www.eload.net) for hydration.

During a training cycle, I'll run 60-85mpw, even in the dead of texas summer--and eload keeps me hydrated much better than gatorade. If you have a sensitive stomach, its acid content is less than the other sport drinks, too.

You can get it at bike and triathlon shops--never seen it at running stores.

Gatorade or other "electrolyte" drinks are good in distance running, as-is simple water with a little bit of NaCl in it.

Basically your bodily fluids has salt in it - too much water will dilute this salt. If there is not enough salt in the fluids, and there is more salt in the cells, the water from the fluids go into the cells causing the cells to swell - this is what kills you - organ oedema, including the brain. The DJs involved are idiots - I heard the excerpt from their show, and they were getting calls from concerned listeners and dismissing them. The DJ actually said "Humans are made of 90% water, it's okay" - idiot.

i heard about it on kevin and bean. they had a listener call in and suggest a contest for meet golfer Michelle Wie...that they have people drink as much water as they can without peeing, and call it "hold your wee to meet Wie." I later heard about the original incident.

Sick humor their fans have...

I'd drink a pint of her wee just to see where it came from...

Why is it the radio station's fault? What if it was beer? Or marshmallows? Don't people ever get a clue that if you feel bad, it might be a bad idea? It's only scandelous because it's "shock jocks" on the radio...if it was Fear Factor would the producers and host be fired? Doubt it.

It's outrageous that anyone but the dead woman is held responsible. Didn't she pour the water into her own mouth?

She died because of her own stupidity, we can only hope her kids learn something from this. It is hard to have a nice attitude when someone does something really stupid then some gets sued over that stupidity. No personal responsibility there, is there.
