Gun Transfer Question
My grandfather is giving me some of his guns. I stopped by the local FFL/Gun Store and asked them what I would need to do. They more or less told me absolutely nothing, that because they are not being sold there is no paperwork needed. Is this correct?

every state has its own gun laws and if thats what the Dealer said I would more or less go with that. Chanchs are that Grandpa never registered those guns in the first place because he bought them before U had to. There are people who never want the govt to know what guns they have. Kind of like what they don't know won't hurt U.

I already mentioned the Remington Model 17 20 Ga.
There is also a bolt-action Marlin 22LR. There is a musket replica my grandfather built from a kit. There are also two handguns, I don't know much about. I think one is a .38 revolver from when my grandfather was a cop in Hasbrouck Heights in the 1950's. The other have no idea about.

Last thing you want is to fill out any paperwork on these. Less that anyone in the state, local or fed govt knows about it, the better.
In 1936 Hitler used the gun registration books to sieze firearms from the private owners. Could happen again... you never know.

Yes, Jersey. I know it was fired at the practice range, but I doubt it was ever fired in the line of duty.

Is this all occuring inside one state? If yes, no issues. If no, you will need to go through a FFL.

check it out on Packing.org. if you are crossing state boundaries and have weapons in the vehicle, especially handguns, at least have them secured, unloaded in some kind of locked container. If you have a carry permit, you might want to have it with you.

I think in Illinois, you need to have a FOID... and if you're unlucky enough to have some sort of gun registration, you'd have to transfer them to your name.
Those of us in free states... you'd just go pick them up.

I was watching one of those crime solving shows last night. This girl was murdered in 1973, before DNA, when the best "list" was a phonebook. They tried to track a gun purchased in 1965 in Phoenix, but no luck.
They kept going back to this case through the years. DNA became available, the samples were preserved well so they were able to extract the DNA, they had databases of people now. They decided to look for the gun purchaser in the state of the murder (Michigan, before all they had were phonebooks, not so easy to look at every phonebook in the state.....) Anyhoo, over 30 years later, they found the guy who purchased it. Was easier because they had an age range now. Happy that he was still alive. They asked him what happened to the gun. He couldn't remember. Months and months of him thinking, "what happened to that gun?" All the potential names came up dead. Then months later, he came up with another possibility, it turned up to be the murderer. Long story, sorry, but I kept thinking....OMG, what if someone came up to me 30 years later to ask me what happened to some gun I bought 30 years later......it's funny....someone coming to your door after all that time to ask you if you can remember that kind of stuff....... When my dad had his stroke in 1990, some time later, my mother sold one of his guns. I still can't remember who we sold it to...Wayne something....... Whenever I sell a gun, and I am not a dealer, I ask for a drivers license and copy the info or make a copy of the license. I also have the buyer sign a receipt. I then log the info into my gun book as sold with a date and serial number. I don't have to do it but when dealing with ATF, better safe than sorry. Mind you I do not sell a lot of guns, maybe 2 or 3 a year. I buy more than I sell, but that is the definition of a collector.

Illinois has its share of gun statutes, one of the bigger sections in the ATF supplied book of state ordinances.
legion, do you presently own any firearms? Are they owned 'by the book'? IOW, did you jump through any hoops to possess. Normally I would say just go pick them up, as Eric says, private sales, no transfer paperwork (if picked up in person. Joe, re 'used the gun registration books to sieze firearms from the private owners', I can't wait till they come to my shop. My stack of 4473's go to the ceiling. Some of my customers don't have the best penmanship either. Around here guns are traded like ball cards. I've had the some serial #'s from six different people. Jim

I can and do already legally possess firearms. All they've had to do when I've bought new is call in my FOID card to the state police to ensure I am currently allowed to purchase. Of course, this makes a convenient choke point if Obama/Blagoyevich/Dailey's gun rationing scheme goes through.
