Have you guys heard about the volcano underneath Yellowstone?

I recently watched a documentary on the HUGE volcano underneath Yellowstone, which included some computer graphics of what a massive eruption would be like. It's
unf%ckingbelievable! It would make Mt. St. Helens look like a firecracker dud.

Also, I saw one on a volcano in the Azores, which, WHEN, not if, the side of the mountain falls into the Atlantic, would send a tsunami to the US east coast which would even dwarf the one that devastated Indonesia and Thailand two years ago.

I know there's nothing we can do about this stuff, but it makes you think. I've read a few of Carl Sagan's books, so I understand how small and insignificant we are and how temporary our stewardship of the planet is. But man.... this stuff is heavy!

Yup rick definitely volcanic activity under yellowstone np. To be honest it is actually three giant caldera's - massive magma chambers that have previously erupted and the ground above the chamber fill in the hole, i.e sink hole.

You've been watching too much TLC (or was it Discovery channel). They have a whole series on mega-natural disasters: supervolcanos, tornados, mega-tsunamis, hurricanes, earthquakes, etc. You watch that, and there's no place you want to live in the world.

Yet somehow there are those who thumb their noses at the most urgent and immediate threat to our species - global climate change due to overpopulation, pollution and unsustainable practices. Ironic, no?

Actually, I worry far less about global "warming" when I watch such shows. A mega volacano eruption would cool the planet a good 10-20 deg. withing about a month, which is far more than any human effort could muster. It's a matter of when, not if. Mt. Pinatubo in 1991 was the biggest one we ever recorded and it dropped global temps. And it was a tiny fart compared to what WILL happen someday.
