What Car Did You Take Your Driver's Exam in?
The day of my sixteenth birthday in 1970 I took my sister's then-new Vokswagen Autostickshift, light yellow, chick mobile Beetle, left it in high gear (so it was a pig on takeoff), and took the test.
Also took my Dad's CL175 Honda motorcycle for the bike test. The tester said, "Okay drive across the parking lot, make a couple of circulars left and then right and come back shifting slowly. THAT'S what constituted a motorcycle's driver's exam in California then.

1993 Mercury Villager.
A few months after my 17th birthday. It took me three tries to pass, as I took driver's ed. when I was 15 and my parents wouldn't let me take the test (or practice any driving) until then. I learned to drive after I had my license.

'68 Chevrolet Malibu wagon
First thing the examiner says as he walks up to the car (I had been waiting about 20 minutes) - Turn off the dam radio. Last thing he sez - I wish I could have found one more thing wrong so I could flunk you. Even after all the yes sirs, no sirs, thank you sirs.

It was a friends '65 Chevy Impala and it was 1972.
When we were 15 1/2 we signed up for "behind the wheel" instruction from our high school. There was a 3 month wait for the cars with automatic transmissions, but there was no wait if you chose the 4 speed manual VW bug. After the second day of a five day program, the instructor told me I passed. He wanted to spend the extra time with the other 2 students who had never been allowed to drive anything prior. |

1993 BMW 525i with a 4 speed automatic
It was then onto the minivan for the first month I had my license until I "proved" to my dad that I was ready to drive the 924 (stick) on my own and all that entailed. For the first month I had to "practice" driving stick everyday for a few hours (basically I would come home and cruise the local neighborhoods for hours until my dad would let me drive it everyday)
