Yep, they are getting to be great deals. I bought mine for just over $15k just over a year ago with about 70k on it. Has almost all of the options too, Sport package, 030 suspension, CD Changer, Full Leather, painted roll bar, traction control, etc. etc.
I think they'll continue to drop, but unless they aren't running or something, I can't see them getting below the $8k-12k range for quite a while after that point.

The only problem with them is they are only good for around 50-60,000 miles before they need a new motor. A new long block from Porsche is over $10,000. I thought about a boxster, but maintenance scares me a lot. One dealer here had one for over 10 months, I think he traded it off for a Honda.

Actually, first years are fine, it's 98s/99s that have the sleeve issue where they can blow up.
Even then, I don't know what the actual percentage is of engines that have the problem, the people who have engines die complain a lot louder than the people who's cars run fine. Mine has over 90k now and runs great.

I really haven't heard anything off putting about the Boxster (or any of the new Porsches). But as far as performance, a couple track drivers have told me the Boxster simply trounces the air-cooled 911s. Hmmm...interesting. I think I'll wait and read Wayne's book before entertaining any idea of purchasing one. Wayne - do Pelicans get advanced copies?

When the Boxster first came out I assumed the slab sides would give way in a year or two. But fender flares never happened???
I understand the desire to not upstage the 996/7 but damn. Anyone else see this as a major aesthetic flaw?

the boxster's design has never been it's strong characteristic. the front nose is too rounded, the headlights are too big and droopy and the back end looks all wrong.
that's why the prices have fallen. nobody wants them ! |

I'm not ranting on them, "fear mongering", but after talking about this car to more than a few mechanics, they seem to have the same opinion. That's that these cars have more engine related problems than 911's. I would love to have one myself, but the engine scares me because I dont do much work engine work myself. I would love to AX one to see how they handle. Probably the newer ones are great, and I hope Porsche worked out all the kinks.

I think prices have dropped simply because Porsche has produced so many Boxsters. BTW: for whatever aesthetic displeasure one gets from the Boxster, the Cayman isn't much prettier. There's a sort of big-muscled purposeness to both cars, but neither are pretty or beautiful like an Aston Martin or Jaguar.

Boxster..........."big-muscled purposeness"?????????
My point above was a lack of muscle, it looks weak for lack of a better word. I still like them, but I get a little angry at it's never reaching its' potential visually. Look at the progression of the 911, it grew more muscular every few years.
