Does it send/receive a bunch or just a couple? When you hit the stop button IE tells the site "nevermind, stop sending me stuff" so that may be what you are seeing.

Normally when you hit the stop button I'd expect a flash or two on the network icon, but not more than 1 or 2 quick flashes.

Not to mention that there is other network traffic going on... if you really want to find out what it is, you'll need a packetsniffer.

The icon keeps flashing, and additionally when I double click on the icon after pressing the x, the bytes keep going up.

Have you done a search using Ad Aware or Spybot? Try that and see what you have that most people do not realize are on their computer and sending info back to their home.

It does a lot of things it's not supposed to do.

Use a different browser.

I agree, I'd do a thorough scan for spyware, trojan's, etc....

I guess it depends upon how much it keeps flashing. If it flashes non-stop, then that might be a problem, but if it's just occasional, then probably not. XP is more complex and has more going on in the background that accesses the network than 98. You can check both your system tray (bottom right where the time is) to see what apps are running there. That may give you a clue. Also, you can check the processes that are running on your box. Hit ctrl-alt-del. You should either see the task manager or see a button that will pull it up. Once you are at the task manager choose "processes" Take the name of each process and do a google search for the process exactly as it is spelled in taskman.

Stuff that you will probably see in XP

lsass.exe, svchost.exe, svchost.exe, javaw.exe, etc.... Some of them will probably be listed a couple of times, like svchost. Don't freak if you have a big list. I have 53 processes listed right now. There are probably 5-10 for my printer, 5 or so for Trend Micro virus stuff, some for my firewall, some that are drivers for video, sound, mouse, scanner, etc....

Like I said, check each on google. Most processes these days are listed someplace on the net because people are so security conscious. So everyone is likely to be listed on some sort of security website.

One thing, are you certain that it's IE that's sending and receiving? Lots of stuff in Windows accesses the network.

OK, first I even closed the browser, while still staying connected online, and it still keeps flashing sending and receiving.

I checked the "processes" ,and yes there are many listed, one of them keeps fluctuating.....bigfix.ex. the CPU and then the Mem Usage keeps going up for bigfix.exe.

I tried ending the bigfix.exe, but the bytes still keep sending and receiving more and more.

Well after about 10 minutes the icon appears to finally stop flashing.

Have about 45 "processes"

Also, I notice a number of the processes have identical Image Names.

I did a search at www.google.com for bigfix.exe and this is what I found in the second link, http://www.auditmypc.com/process/bigfix.asp

bigfix.exe (Bigfix) - Details

BigFix.exe is a tool used to download support information from hardware manufacturers and software vendors. It will also perform checks over your system and try to locate configuration errors and security vulnerabilities. The Spy Bot database is updated often, but inaccuracies may still exist, often caused by viruses named after valid files such as Bigfix. Always verify your results just to play it safe.
BIGFIX.EXE - Disclaimer

Every attempt has been made to provide you with the correct information for bigfix.exe or BIGFIX. Many spyware/malware programs use filenames of usual, non-malware programs. Who knows, it could have been windows update checking for updates, it could have been bigfix looking for whatever it looks for. I'm betting that you could uninstall bigfix if you look for it in add/remove programs in control panel.
