Antiwar protestors abuse disabled vet

This NY Times article observed antiwar demonstrators spitting at an obviously disabled veteran amputee at the recent antiwar rally in DC. I imagine the P***y antiwar folks were lucky there were police there to protect them from a ass-whipping from a guy on crutches.

Protest Focuses on Iraq Troop Increase
By IAN URBINA
...There were a few tense moments, however, including an encounter involving Joshua Sparling, 25, who was on crutches and who said he was a corporal with the 82nd Airborne Division and lost his right leg below the knee in Ramadi, Iraq. Mr. Sparling spoke at a smaller rally held earlier in the day at the United States Navy Memorial, and voiced his support for the administration’s policies in Iraq.

Later, as antiwar protesters passed where he and his group were standing, words were exchanged and one of the antiwar protesters spit at the ground near Mr. Sparling; he spit back.

Capitol police made the antiwar protesters walk farther away from the counterprotesters.

“These are not Americans as far as I’m concerned,” Mr. Sparling said.

Another counterprotester, Larry Stark, 71, a retired Navy officer who fought in Vietnam for five years and was a prisoner of war, said, “We never lost a battle in Vietnam but we lost the war, and the same is going to be true in Iraq if these protesters have their way.”

The protesters on Saturday were undermining troop morale, Mr. Stark said, and increasing the likelihood of a premature withdrawal.

“It’s like we never learn from the past,” he said.

Thanks fintpaste. Vet's deserve our respect. To do otherwise is shameful. These folks are just carrying out our govt's orders. Better to villify the govt's foreign policy approach.

Sure. I agree.

But it says "words were exchanged." What was the conduct of this soldier towards these people? Was he intentionally invoking a fight?

This isn't the 60s anymore, it's the 2000s, and people no longer just spit in the direction of people simply because they're soldiers.

CC, you never know. There are all sorts of people out there. It kinda sucked being in the service during Vietnam. A significant percentage of people here treated servicemen as scum. There will always be a percentage of people that don't get it...that the service personal are just "serving" America, and should be treated with some respect, even if one doesn't agree with the govt's foreign policy approach.

So your saying that a diabled person, through words, can provoke people to spit on him?? When is it remotely justifiable for someone to spit on you??

According to the article, no one spit on him. Additionally, apparently he spit back so.....

And the OP is trying to erroneously imply someone spit in his direction because he's a vet. There's no proof in this.....

http://getoffthis.blogspot.com/2007/01/tens-of-thousands-rally-in-dc-for-troop.html

for the rest of the story. no mention of spitting, other blogs suggest it was made up as the distance between the groups was substantial.

Jim, it didn't just kinda sucked. It really sucked. That was completely horrible for them to do back then, and yes one who is/was serving in the military indeed deserve respect. No one should've treated those poor boys like that back then.

However, this is not the 60s, there are no longer people doing that to soldiers, that era and world is over. I don't hear of people doing the stuff that people did back then.

However, just because someone served in the military doesn't give them free pass to do anythign they want and no one can do anything in return. Now we don't know what exactly happened here, but from this article, it appears a prowar protestor got into an altercation with an antiwar protestor. The prowar poster happened to be in the military. I'm not getting the feeling what happened 40 years ago is happening here.....

It won't be long before the fabricated stories about being spit on will be heard, again. Just a matter of time.
