Oregon License Suspension

I got a friendly notice in the mail from the Oregon DMV that my driving privileges will be suspended unless I pay a $459 fine from 2000 (original fine $109 for doing 59 MPH in a 55).

I don't have an Oregon license, I'm not even American. But they are going to suspend my license anyway and call the DMV in Canada and have them suspend my license here too. What gives?

Do states have reciprocal agreements with each other? IE: If I get a ticket in WA state will they know I have an outstanding one in OR?

The woman I spoke to on the phone said that they reinstate fines every so often and that "Wendy" (someone in her office I presume) "knows" someone at the MOT (DMV in Canada) and can have my license suspended here.

Oregon lawmakers have always baffled me (I lived in Portland in the late 80's) but I think the DMV is full of it if they say they can suspend a license in another country.

I do drive in the US a lot so what are my options?

New York has no other reciprocity with any other state. I can speed all I want away from home and just pay the fines.. No points. However, NYS does have some sort of deal with Quebec. Go figure.

But - not paying or otherwise walking away from a ticket will catch up with you in the end. The cross border thing does not surprise me at all.

Who knows how to get a license in Mexico? Not that I want to break any laws….

So, did you receive the ticket? Meaning, is this legit? If so, I'd suggest paying up. A weird one came up on a talk show here...an Oregon trucker, drives tankers locally, was threatened by NY state with license suspension of his commercial license for not paying the fines of several trucking tickets. Now get this...this guy has never been East of the Mississippi in his life, was in Oregon on the dates of all the NY tickets. He can prove this from his employer. Obviously a case of ID theft...somebody out there using his ID to drive trucks carrying volatile materials. "Hello? Homeland Security???"

Most states have reciprocal agreements with most other states and many Canadian Prov's. One of the drawbacks of the modern computer systems.

If you cross the border frenquently, you should take care of this. I was on a m/c trip with a group entering Canada. After a computer check, they plucked one guy out of line. He'd had a DUI in Oregon and it came up on the computer. They required a $150 deposit to do a full "criminal history check" on him from both countries. They told him, he didn't get his money back regardless and they could deny his entry based on the results of the record check.

We left him behind and he sat there for 2 hours, finally got his clearance and caught up to us that evening with a lighter wallet...

What's going to happen to you when you pull up to Canadian Customs driving and they find your lic. suspended....Hope you live within walking distance of the border...

If so, you will be red-flagged on the NDR (National Driver Register) as having had a driver's license suspension. This may or may not come back to haunt you later, depending on what line of work you're in.

if i were you...........i would NEVER ENTER THE U.S. AGAIN! you will be labled a federal felon because of crossing state lines (oregon-washington state lines) to avoid prosecution and be labled an ALIEN FELON for entering this country illegally and having a FAILURE TO APPEAR(same as not paying fine) WARRANT OUT AGAINST YOU!

should you decide to make another foray into our country and get caught, they will arrest you, handcuff you, read you your rights, and jail you in a federal detention center w/no windows. they will also confiscate your p-car, put it on a non-p-car friendly tow truck and put your p-car in a federal p-car detention center w/no windows!

bummer man...........i feel your pain!

Jorian:

It's a bear - but probably not worth fighting.

FYI - I once received a speeding ticket mailed to me by the DMV in Victoria - which had been issued by the police in Medford Oregon.

I was to send payment directly to Medford - but the fact that Victoria mailed it to me suggests a sinister degree of cooperation between these authorities.

Probably lost his right to "fight it" after he failed to respond. Most juridictions work that way.

".....the fact that Victoria mailed it to me suggests a sinister degree of cooperation between these authorities...." Agreed - I am not a fan of US law dictating provincial/national policy.

I asked them to send me a copy of the ticket. They did. Its' legit so I guess I have to pay. I have a summer place in the US and a driving suspension would be a major obstacle.

I did call the Superintendent of MV here in BC to find out what, if any, agreements exist between BC and the US. I'll post results when they get back to me.

since YOU ARE NOW A FEDERAL FELON............ie. FAILURE TO APPEAR your in DEEP DOO DOO!

since 9/11 unless you've been living in a cave, there has been a slight change of format when it comes to aliens. especially aliens with felony backgrounds.........and thats YOU!

so wise guy, since you always want to start crap w/me, i'll give you a little advice.............the people you want to speak with are no longer called the U.S. BORDER PATROL. thats is now encompassed by its new moniker...........ICE. immigration/customs/enforcement. i would get on their website and start looking for a contact, that may be able to help you. just paying the fine is now a MOOT POINT! ie. even turning yourself in and offering to pay fine on the spot is going to get you jailed and you will find out all about the american judicial system and get your very own "day in court." and that will be FEDERAL COURT! not some rinky-dink county or po-dunk city court in oregon.

in america it is ALWAYS BEST if you want to be a criminal , to do things on a FEDERAL SCALE! the accomadations/food/prison dress etc. is always on a finer scale than say a city/county/state prison. so jorian you have reached the BIG TIME in your infinite wisdom, by failing to pay your fine which now has worked itself due to your inattention,/brilliance into FAILURE TO APPEAR. which now places you in the BIG LEAGUES, as far as smart criminal minds.

you have achieved (1) point for effort on this one from us!

your name/birthdate/description/ on the day your case went to court and YOU failed to appear, has now gone into a hollowed spot in the NCIS computer and will not be removed without one hell of alot of work on your part.

now how do i know all this.............????

i have been crossing the border into mexico for many many many years now. when you approach the u.s. border, there is a camera thats taking video of you in your car. the agent looks at his screen and punches in your plate number. then he asks for I.D. since NOW YOU ARE REQUIRED BY LAW TO HAVE A NEW PASSPORT, he then looks for wants and warrants on the COMPUTER FROM HELL! when your name comes rolling up blinking in bright RED, that you are a FELON................lots of really nice men with REALLY BIG GUNS, that go RAT A TAT TAT will soon surround you! the spike strips in front and back of you embedded in the roadway will go up, to thwart your vehicles escape, and you will have made your re-entry back into the U.S. in the pomp and circumstance style you are accustomed to.

so what to do, what to do, for poor jorian the wise a$$????

maybe pack your K & N equipped p-car with trailer hitch/trailer w/enough belongings to assure a nice comfortable stay while incarcerated here in the good 'ole u.s.a. or take my advice and contact ICE! reason you should contact ICE first is that you have entered into FEDERAL JURISDICTION. and the FEDS dont give a rats a$$ who yo daddy is, who you know in oregon, or how much money you have! they also dont give a rats A$$ about city/county/or state of oregon laws. as mentioned you have entered a whole new arena.

so contact ICE...........wade thru lots of phone calls/e-mails etc. and you may even have to hire a international lawyer to complete this circus of your own doing.

i really feel for you man, i feel your pain!

WRONG! Passports are not required when driving across the border. Learn the laws of your own country before spouting this $hit.

+1 Not to mention failure to appear on a traffic ticket or a misdemeanor offense is not a felony crime. They just issue a bench warrant.

On the other hand Jorian if it was me I would just pay the new, larger fine. Will cost you more to get an attorney to deal with it.

It had to be done Jorian.

But I hope you're not taking the hyperbole from Mr. Kieffner seriously.

All nonsense.
