Yearly bonus = 2 rifles

I've been planning this for a while and we're finally receiving our yearly bonuses. So, it's rifle buying time. I don't have the cash for high high end ones, but I decided on 2 "plinkers"

An AR-15 variant and an AK-47 variant. For the AR-15, I'd prefer not to spend over $1000. For the AK, I'm looking in the $500-600 region. An M1A is also sought, but I'm going to wait on that for a little while.

Any brands to stay way far away? I've been looking at 2 possibilities for the AK-47. I can buy a Romanian parts kit for something like $250 and then a receiver for $75-100, or a Polish Rifle for $699. For the AR-15, I'm looking at either a Bushmaster or Olympic. I might go a few bucks more if some thought it bought a lot more rifle.

For the AK, look at a VEPR. Very high quality guns.

As far as Kalasnikov's, it's my understanding that the Yugoslav variants were the best made. Mostly machined, no or almost no stamped parts. Here's an interesting historical page: http://kalashnikov.guns.ru/

On the AR front, it'd be hard to beat a Bushmaster made rifle. I'd get a flat top receiver, enable's mounting enhanced sights easily, and a 20 inch heavy barrel. Take a look here http://gunbroker.com/ , there are lots of them.

Bulgarian AK = Aresnal....the trigger pull is phenomenal....milled Receiver..absolutely the Best.

Colt AR is the way to go..if not than Armalite...

Stay with quality and U will never go wrong.

I have seen the Rominian stuff and its crude, especially when compared to the Aresnal guns.

Am looking for a Knights SR25...yeah verily..

I owned a Bushmaster. Maybe it was the only bad one they ever made, but that thing sucked balls. Never again. The Colt that I had prior to that never gave me any trouble.

ymmv.

Found an Armalite for $899 and a Yugoslav for $699 or a Bulgarian for $999.

Check out www.AR15.com. Glocktalk and SIGforum have excellent classifieds sections too. You can really find some steals there.

Rick,

You've been to my place: would an AR15 be a good ground hog gun with a scope?

You might be a redneck...

AR-15's just make you want to shoot stuff. Gawd, they're fun. I've never shot a varmint with one, but I bet it makes a big strawberry mess.

The Middies that were here when you brought your AR still talk about it...another ATF night will be scheduled in April.

If you have any suggestions for a GH gun, let me know.

I have a Rock River Arms Varmit rifle, and have never had a single problem with it. It has a heavy barrel, etc.

We also issue Bushmasters at work, and have never had problems with them.

Well, I went with a Brand New Armalite AR15A2B. 20 inch barrel, Black, fixed stock. $899. Let's see if my lead on an AK will end up as a sale...

Too bad you didn't catch me a month ago. I feel like I just gave away an Arsenal AK and a pre-ban M4

An AR would be an Okay rifle for GH's, but their accuracy for such a small target is dicey. If you want the challenge, go for it. I used to occaisionally hunt gophers in Montana with a 9mm Browning high power. Hit one about every 20 rounds.

When I really wanted to hit them consistently I used my Ruger M77 with a 24 inch barrel, 3-9X Redfield (one of the best in those days), in .257 Roberts caliber. I loaded a 75 grain Hornady bullet designed to shatter on impact, which left the barrel at about 3600 fps. I shot them out to over 200 yards, not bad for a target only 6-7 inches high. All hits were terminal. The advantage of the .257 Roberts was it used a lot less powder than the .25-06, which is way overbore, to get almost the same velocities in a handload.

Take a look at 6mm Remington, the .257 Roberts, and other "middle" caliber weapons. They're very versatile.

LOL. It ain't a real AK unless its stamped outta recycled pop cans. Hell, I can still faintly see the Coca Cola logo on the side of my MAK90.

All this 'milled' business if for guys that get their nails done.

Oh and get a scope from Kalinka to put on the AK..Spitznatz style...

Get a milled receiver, if I wanted a beer can I'd buy a Lexus.

Or a excrement coloured car....
