Texas Gov. orders anti-cancer vaccine

This kind of blows my mind. With a 9 yo daughter I'm on the fence regarding this vaccine. It is very new and I'd like to know more about longterm effects.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070202/ap_on_he_me/cervical_cancer

"AUSTIN, Texas - Bypassing the Legislature, Republican Gov. Rick Perry signed an order Friday making Texas the first state to require that schoolgirls get vaccinated against the sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer.
...
Beginning in September 2008, girls entering the sixth grade — meaning, generally, girls ages 11 and 12 — will have to get Gardasil, Merck & Co.'s new vaccine against strains of the human papillomavirus, or HPV."

money talks, bs walks.

"Merck is bankrolling efforts to pass state laws across the country mandating Gardasil for girls as young as 11 or 12. It doubled its lobbying budget in Texas and has funneled money through Women in Government, an advocacy group made up of female state legislators around the country."

Perry has several ties to Merck and Women in Government. One of the drug company's three lobbyists in Texas is Mike Toomey, Perry's former chief of staff. His current chief of staff's mother-in-law, Texas Republican state Rep. Dianne White Delisi, is a state director for Women in Government.

Perry also received $6,000 from Merck's political action committee during his re-election campaign.

You should be able to get a religious exemption if you decide not to give her the shots...I have been doing a lot of research into vaccinations with a child on the way. Still not sure if they are a good idea or not.

Because 20 years from now I wouldn't want to hear "Oops, we're sorry, we had no idea that the long term side effects are...."
Sounds to me like they are forcing the good people of TX to be guinea pigs.

The "terrible disease" is a sexually transmitted disease. If your children aren't have sex, they don't need to be protected.

Along the same lines, if a vaccine against HIV was discovered, I wouldn't bother getting vaccinated, since my risk factors for getting the virus is, for all practical purposes, non-existent.

Its the HPV - a virus. Lets face it guys, the chances that our lil girls are gonna have sex when they are 15, 16 or 17 is pretty good. We may not like it but it is natural and the percentages point towards it. Anything that helps protect them I am for.

As for being safe? I think I'll take the chance. Better than the alternative.

Geeze guys, think of the advantages here...ONLY girls get the shots. And if it works? No guy in the future need worry about getting warts on his Johnson bar. Sounds win-win to this chauvinistic pig.

It's forced medication without parental consent, and as such it's blatantly illegal.

Agree, Perry is a stupid ****. Althought I do not like the idea of a gov telling me how to care for my kid, I do see it needed for some that really have no clue.

Imagine if a law was pasted to have a vaccine for birth control mandatory until you proved ready and capable of sustaining a life.
