Any other states have the "wheel tax"?

I am getting ready to write a piece to the local news paper about the absurdity of our local wheel tax. Being a car collector, I get to pay a wheel tax on every car I plate. I can only drive one at a time, so why do I get to pay for every car I own?

I wouldn't mind if it was a single tax, say when I renew my license if the fees they charged actually went to maintaining the roads!

I have finally had it, as I recently could not avoid a pothole the size of a Ghia (ok exaggeration) on one of the local main roads. After hitting it, I had to have my rim repaired, and replace the tire. When all was said and done it was about $275 all because the city can't keep our roads in decent shape.

Sorry for venting, just looking for info on other states "wheel taxes"

Thanks,
-Nick

I don't see things changing anytime soon. What gets me more the license fees is the insurance for multiple cars.

Nope. Cars and the ownership thereof is a great excuse for governments to get their hands into peoples' pants. Sales tax, registration fees, taxes on gasoline, taxes on service and parts, parking and traffic enforcement revenue streams, licensing fees, kickbacks from insurance companies, etc. It's one of the biggest cash cows out there for gubmint. They love it when people are dependent on cars.

One of the towns I lived in years ago in Massachusetts charged an "excise tax" (if you can believe this ****) on vehicles in addition to the usual registration fees and other crap you had to pay annually. It sounds very similar to what you're talking about here.

Ummmmm......

Gubmit is not the only insane organization. My private insurance company does not seem to agree that I cannot drive my two cars at once. You'd think that adding a second vehicle onto a policy where there is just one licensed driver in the household would be just a few extra bucks. Nope. My $200 insurance preium would probably be $1500 if I had a full ten-car garage. As if I could drive ten at once.

I can see a tax per vehicle. Just like I can understand a separate license for each vehicle. But private insurance companies are underwriting RISK. And charging more......even though the risk is not greater.

MD recently doubled vehicle registrations fees. As it's a 'fee', it wasn't considered a tax increase, so the Gov kept his no tax increase promise. Some one explain that one.

This is only the beginning.
No more federal subsidies (because Iwreck money has gone to Mr. Cheneys company), so the states have to get creative.

Oh well. No use crying over spilled milk, hindsight is 20/20, etc, etc.
