What happens when amateurs make commercials?

They TOTALLY outclass the pros. Is it just me, or do the commercials this year especially suck? The only clever ones are the Doritos amateur made variety. The mouse trap one kills me. (yet to air-I saw a preview)

I dunno, a bunch of half naked guys swarming GM's PT Cruiser ripoff doesn't exactly make for a great ad in my book.

I make them, and I agree, I haven't seen a decent one yet— including THE amateur Doritos one.

I always like the Sierra Mist commercials (wouldn't touch the actual drink, though), and the Bud Lite commercial with the axe murderers was ok. I kinda feel like the SuperBowl has been trying to get away from the ridiculous half-time show-and-commercials trend over the past couple years.

BTW, the entertainment this year has had a decidedly, um, "un-Masculine" bent to it. First that Cirque-de-Soliel thing, then Prince (who was much better than the Stones, IMHO)

The Bud-Light, Axe murderer ad was funny. "But he's got a chainsaw!"
So too, the K Fed commercial. I always laugh at self flaggelation.

The FedEx moon base commercial was the only one I liked, so far.

I just swallow hard and grab my chest...I work for Honda, and hope I'm not seeing TOO much of my pension being spent on SB ads.

Um, all you guys ARE going to run out an buy a new Honda now, right?

the Chevy commercial where the songs come on based on the various car owners singing was pretty good... the 2 mechanics who kiss over the Snickers bar was kinda funny...

the Doritos commercials were OK...those have been on their website for awhile now...I voted for the checkout lady one...turns out they showed both.

I agree the Chevy commercial pulled at the right heartstrings. The GM commercial with the Robot bad dream was interesting but I might not have gotten it had I not read the preview in the trades.

Think of the 1984 commercial - after it ran you thought to yourself, "Holy cow, I better get one of those" or at least, "I wonder what they will be doing?" And they did it without showing the product.

That ad changed the nature of television commercials - from product promotion to event/spectacle. Every now and then something works. But mostly it's an outrageous waste of money.

yeah I liked that one too....made me sad for the little robot for
a while....and then he woke up.

I give GM and Chevy A's for today's effort.

What was with Sheryl Crow and the hair color commercial? Most of the commercials were lame, or downright stupid.

The best one I saw showed earlier in the day, before the game, one of the Trunk Monkey commercials:

- PT Cruiser commercial : beyond Ghey.
- robot suicide? suicide shouldn't be part of a commercial IMHO, the rest was good

- Ax murderer: Funny
- Doritos: funny
- Combover: funny
- Careerbuilder: funny but tiresome after a while
- snickers: skeevy but funny...end was dumb

A few years ago, most viewers were pleasently suprised with the idea of new, creative commercials during the super bowl.

Now that the commercials have become a highlight, the expectations have become much higher. I think some of the "so-so" ads today would have had high marks just a few years ago. It's difficult to keep topping last year's commercials.
